  6. I think Tommyd posted this a while back, I always thought this was probably the nicest car Fuller built, perfect AA/FD ( not top fuel, AA/FD) lines, green metalflake, the whole deal. Driven by Pat Foster, among others, nice trailer too!

Modified Eliminator at the US Nationals. It looks like a pre race parade as it may be too early for the protests that came about when the NHRA dropped the category. Probably shot from the top of the old D-A tower.

    Roo

Dropping Modified Production and Modified Eliminator were two of the biggest mistakes the NHRA has ever made and I think this was about the time I started losing interest in the NHRA and what they were doing.

  8. Thats Pete Orner driving the Ornermotive Altered out of Cleveland, Ohio. he is a mechanical engineer and designed the fuel injection you see here, later went to a big block chevy. He now lives in Calif. I think he won this race against Charley Smith, i was only at the Summernationals that year!

He had a car that was briefly painted red in very late '63/ very early '64, I know it was just before I joined Uncles Canoe Club (Apr. '64) He was at Pomona with it, don't know how long it lasted, but it was def. red

Here are a couple from Don Ewald's site (I recommend that fueler fans join)...and some captions...None of these are as good as the picture above, but...

The engine was from Dusty's car, explains the caption to the bottom picture...the explosion put Dusty in the hospital with severe burns, which is why both Jeep Hampshire and Pat Foster drove...this caption is also from Don Ewald's site, and has some information on the car:

Chris Karamesines - "ChiZler" - AA/FD - Pomona, 1968. "One of The Greeks many Fuller cars - another beauty. Behind the Greek is Dusty Rhodes' "Rhodes Runner" with the nose on top of the 427 '56 Station Wagon. Jeep Hampshire was in the seat here - - Dusty was up and out of the hospital but not close to able to drive yet.
It wasn't widely known then, but he was hospitalized for at least 6 weeks with grafts on both ankles. This burn deal isn't pretty. To keep the mood as light as possible Gary, Bill Chuck & I made nightly runs with gifts of after shave bottles (you guess at what was in them) burgers & pizza. The nurses and Dusty's ex really appreciated the help... especially the occasional wheel chair eliminations and poker games. This time on his back started his basic interest in model gliders which lead to the real thing, which lead to powered flight and finally to where he is today in the aircraft service industry." Photo by Wayne Franks - Commentary by Don Rudy
"This started life as a Torque Master car. This picture from Lions (LADS) is after the car was clutched & repainted with diamond dust. Evan prettier than the original flake. Dusty did virtually EVERYTHING on the car himself except the body (Arnie Roberts-hammer/Steve Swaja-design), lace the front wheels (John Mitchell), Can't remember the upholstery guy (sorry). And wood laminate the steering wheel (Gary Johnson) - a lot of guys wanted one of these. Now I'm really going to dig into my old stuff. Car was one of Car Craft's top 10 in 66 maybe. More info to come." Commentary by Don Rudy

Thanks to you guys who are taking the time to add captions.
You are writing the permanent history of the sport for those that follow us geezers
who were there. I turn 71 tomorrow and the memories are already fading.

Sandoval & Madden "Scoundrel," Gary Gabelich was one of the drivers..

    1861125_orig.jpg
George Cerney, sbc chevy-powered rear-engined modified roadster. I remember this one well, finished in candy orange, as was the push truck....George ran some really well finished cars....

    2211987_orig.jpg
Jerry Norek, from Long Beach CA with his Delta Machine-sponsored gas roadster, running a blown Chrysler. Delta made blower drives, among other top-end drag racing equipment. The track looks like Fontana, not sure whose Fiat altered is behind the roadster, but that looks like Jim Miles '34 Ford fuel coupe on the trailer in the background. This photo, and some of the others in this post, are from the George Klass Collection, amazing set of pictures categorized into classes

2 shots of the Chrisman and Cannon fueler that won the '59 Smoker's meet. The Chrisman brothers built this car in their Willowbrook CA shop (near Compton), Frank Cannon supplied the money and the motor...The first shot shows the front body, the bottom shot is after they lengthened it to try and keep up with the competition. Fortunately the car has been restored, though I don't know where it is...it once raced at the nostalgia meets in the '90s. In the bottom shot, that is Lloyd Chrisman smoking the cigarette in the pickup (yes, most of did that back then!). Frank Cannon would go to field his own fueler, breaking 199 at Lion's with these new upswept headers that quickly became known as "zoomies," and in weeks all the top fuelers had them.

    3147587_orig.jpg
Caption says it all, Big at the first Smoker's meet, ran the fastest time for unblown cars at around 172, but shelled out the engine....

    4075726_orig.jpg
The big end at Riverside, shot from the spectator bridge that spanned the straightaway on the road course. I don't know who this is, notice that the tires have grown off the rims, looks like the driver is reaching for the chute

    4572913.jpg
Raymond Godman's Tennessee Bo-weevil...Raymond was shot in the back by a sniper in Korea, but that never got in the way of his ability to create really fast competitive cars...this one ran a blown Chrysler on gas, T body on a Chassis Research Chassis.

  17. Lefty Mudersbach
    Born: March 21, 1931

    Died: February 11, 1966

    Buried:

    Age: 34

    Full Name: Allen Mudersbach

    Nickname: "Lefty"

Drag Strip: Irwindale Raceway, Irwindale, California

    Event: AHRA Winternationals

    Accident Date: February 11, 1966

    Car: "Lefty's Speed Shop" AA/FD

Biographical: He suffered fatal injuries when his dragster blew a tire traveling at about 180 MPH and overturned several times. It happened when he was making a single pass during a qualifying run. He was apparently dazed when he was hit in the head by the disintegrating tire and failed to deploy the chute or apply the brakes. The driver's compartment was wrenched loose from the frame by the impact of the car flipping over and hurtled 300 feet. He was transported to Santa Teresita Hospital in Duarte where he was dead on arrival. A resident of Pico Rivera, California, he was survived by his wife, Bobbie, and three children, Sharryl, Dennis, and Brian. He operated a speed shop in Whittier. He was NHRA national champion in 1957, running out of Phoenix with an Olds-powered A/GD. He was the winner of the first AHRA championship in 1960. He had been a drag racer for twenty years. He had the first gas dragster to record a sub-10 second e.t., accomplished in July 1957 at Lions Drag Strip with a 9.93 run. He moved to California in 1959, teaming up with Chet Herbert. They ran twin Chevy engines on gas, setting a world mark of 195 MPH with an 8.53 e.t. They won Bakersfield in 1961. Mudersbach and Herbert split up their partnership in 1963-64. The car he was driving at the time of his fatal crash was owned by Dick Goss.
