Cadillac powered, that's all I know

Really early Saugus, wonder if it was a part of the SoCal Speed Shop team?

Obviously not in motion...Romeo Palamides Desoto powered car from Oakland, CA, note the early mag wheel that Romeo made...Dave Marquez's Ardun-powered roadster in the background.

    TC1.jpg
Gary Cagle, might that be Troy in the seat? Not sure of the track.

    swindlerA.jpg
Sam Parriott in the City of Industry Special, blown Ford, Kurtis chassis (I think?), racing SWC. As Dean Lowe commented earlier, Sam was the mayor of the City of Industry, apparently some city money went into this car...

    Jim-Fox.jpg
Before there was Weekly, Rivero, Fox, and Holding, there was Jim Fox in this rear-engined blown Chrysler roadster from Pomona. It was painted a sort of candy purple, well finished...notice that the blower is chain driven right behind Jim's head. I saw this run several times, at Pomona, and Riverside, it always seemed to go straight and fast.

    tumblr_lsc77lrYnL1qhl9loo1_500.jpg
This is either Lions or Santa Ana...Bill Butters near side in the Groh's Texaco car. Bill would later partner on a fuel modified roadster and then a top fuel dragster.

    earlybatchelor.jpg
I think this may have been posted before, but a great show of two interpretations of "modified roadster." Pape Brothers rear engined big flathead powered car, racing Tony Waters when Tony was still running the GMC. The Pape Brothers roadster has been found and perfectly restored...Tony went on to put a blown Desoto on fuel and was runner-up to Art Chrisman at the first Fuel and Gas meet. This picture was taken at Bakersfield...

    GrecoClark.jpg
Greico and Clark "Black Box" -- Olds powered gas roadster, regular at SoCal tracks, Hank Clark drove. Later Hank would go top fuel racing.

    604.jpg
Stebbins & son competition coupe. This started out as the JADO Special lakes car that Jim Kamboor ran with Don Alderson (Jim Kamboor later ran his blown Chrysler in John Wenderski's car, it was his engine in John's car during his fatal run at Ramona). The original JADO car was sponsored by Harvey Aluminum and had an aluminum frame, but when this car was converted to drag racing use, the frame and the blown flathead got replaced; in this configuration it ran a rear-mounted blown Pontiac. The car was featured in Hot Rod Magazine, but as far as I know it never raced. Good looking car with lots of chrome and candy maroon paint. It may still be around??

    dode-scans013.jpg
Another early Saugus shot, the roadster above is in the background, looks like they are racing this flathead four-banger. These two pictures (sorry I didn't put them together) are credited to the Dode Martin file...guess Dode (of Dragmaster fame) took them, he was there at the start of drag racing.

No clue but it is a great picture. Beeline? Paradise Mesa??

  3. The JADO coupe is still around. Jesse James wound up with it. He sold it to who, I don't know. He claims he now regrets selling it.

Yes, both of the Parriott cars were built by Frank Kurtis. Both were funded by the City of Industry treasury. Both were sold to repay the city. The second car, the one pictured, is currently in the NHRA museum.

It might be in motion but it is a recent photo Tommy. You are not the first one to get fooled and post it here. :)

The dragster and trailer are neat but to me the real star in this picture is the 'big window' '56.

really early drag racing, looks like Santa Ana but not all the right parts are there...notice that the street roadster driver has no helmet, and the coupe is really a roadster with lots of painted cardboard, and maybe a straight 8?...we had to start somewhere.

    _14.jpg
I'm not sure of this one, maybe early Lee Christian? note the drilled tube axle.

    _215.jpg
Cyr & Hopper, not sure where

    img231.jpg
Calvin Rice in the J.E Riley special -- one of the first slingshot style dragsters. Calvin won the '55 NHRA Nationals with this car, but not with this engine...which they blew at the first running of the meet at Great Bend, KS. When they re-ran the end of the meet in Arizona because the Great Bend meet got rained out, Rice won with a substitute fuel flathead.

We think of Kallita as the original Bounty Hunter, but these guys got there first, Koenig and Pick, from the Long Beach area. Joe Koenig built the motor, Steve Pick designed the chassis. The track looks like Bakersfield, probably late '50s

    c (3).jpg
Carl Grimes in his Buick-powered Fiat A/A at Santa Ana. Carl, from Tempe, AZ, hauled this altered in a converted school bus. Won a lot of races, and competed at the NHRA Nationals several times.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. I would love to have that pickup for a nostalgia tow vehicle.

    Enloe,
the car is Nye Frank's Pulsator, driven by Floyd Lipencotte Jr, aka Bob Muravez. Google it like I did and you will find lots of photos of it with and without the body. It has been pictured in this thread but with as many pages as are here now Google was quicker.

  27. The Pulsator was also owned , along with Nye Frank, by George Klass, the same guy that has the pictures website. It ran way better without the "streamlined" body.
The streamling craze of the 60's was short lived, with Craig Breedlove, the Loghee Bros, Ivo and others giving it a shot. The added weight actually slowed 'em down.
