    Trophy Whore(s)?
It's just like the first time you step into the Chicken Ranch outside of Reno,, the girls are lined up for your choice.
Just remember,,, We always had Oakland,,

Ryan, dude.... Only you could have pulled off that genuinely entertaining read! Ya know what? I found myself not really caring this year either. I mean, there were only like 492 cars in contention, right?

I'll never have a huge log/timber home in Montana either, but I sure enjoy looking at the materials, creativity and craftsmanship that goes into the planning and execution of building one.
I'm more into what the result of the build is,not what it cost to get there. I have the same feelings towards high caliber cars, won't ever be affordable for me but I can appreciate the results of those who can.

back in my dating days, we would always look for the Ava Gardner's in the places we used to go...Always.
once in great while you landed one. Fun because you were the king of the place when you landed her...and that was as much fun as the chick herself. Then almost always they were found to be high maintenance girls who needed to be "seen" all the time. All eyes needed to be on them. That got old fast. Most of my friends and myself had back up girls in case we struck out...reliable, not the best looking, but could be counted on when needed late at nigh.

I wasn't even there... and I'm kind of tired of writing about the winners... In the past couple of years I felt like the winners were getting more relevant to what we do here, but this year's is not at all... And that's not a knock on Bobby. I mean, his work is insane good. He has a great eye for stance and proportion and a lot of his cars actually haul ass. I can't really think of a car he's built that I don't understand. He's consistent as hell. You could have shown me the winning car ten years ago and I would have known instantly that Bobby built it.

At the end of the day, I'm not a car show guy really... and frankly, I'm not qualified to even have a strong opinion on this kind of stuff. It's just out of my wheelhouse...

  9. Damn Ryan;I thought I was reading a column by Fred Reed. You're good! As for the GNRS I haven't bothered to read any of the posts about it and I'm not sure why. Possibly because I started adopting your outlook on life when I turned 40(that was 31 years ago)and I've never looked back. In case I haven't said it recently thank you for all you do.

  10. Damn Ryan, that was kinda off the wall....I almost hit the REPORT button.:D

BTW, Ava left the swanky bar with old blue eyes in his spiffy new 1954 Ford for a tryst in his mobile bungalow. HRP

I gave them all a look, yawned, and started digging through the various GNRS photo threads. I was more captivated by Casny's new roadster and that bent Volkswagen bus than any of the AMBR contenders.

I hear ya! I didn't go this year either... This month has not been kind money wise. As close as I got was escorting JEEM and his rather incredibly cool '37 pickup for the first ten miles or so of their voyage, and it took everything in me to peel the 'Bucket off at 75th Avenue and head back home.

But ya, there really wasn't any connection to what we do in this year's field. It was like they were all almost back to being so far out of reach, and so far back into the dreaded "street rod" territory that it just didn't stir my soul at all. Where were guys like the Inland Emperors? It's been proven the last couple of years that a well constructed, basic perfect car does have a shot at this level of glory.

Oh, and by the way, I have at one point landed my "Ava Gardner"... Never been in so many fist fights in a couple of years in my life! Always someone who thinks they can do it better than you, and the second the money isn't there, trust me, someone else can. I'll stick with "nerdy-cute" from here on out... On that level, at least the inherit evil is kinda fun!

  16. Do you mean where were they in the voting or in the competition because the mint green '27 roadster was theirs.

Oh, your kidding! I didn't know that car was in the competition! I thought that was just regular street roadster class stuff. Not that is wasn't spectacular, there were just so many cars competing this year. I really shoulda gone. My apologies to all involved, I meant no slight.

    Chicken ranch, Reno?
    Pics?

Love that roadster Ryan posted, ten times better then this years winner.
But the issue with this car is solely that I don't like.
Not that I don't respect the craftsmanship, not that it ain't a good build, not looking good or nothing like it, it's only flore is I don't like it.

The same thing with the girl, if I can't have hear she is not a whore, she is just classy or out of my league. If she expected drinks to talk to me, still no. But if I needs cash to take her home, it's a yes.

So neither her or the AMBR is a whore.

  20. Ryan, good analogy.
purpose for all of them, some are meant to look at, some to rent, some to own and cherish, some to drive.

Well said. Wish others would realize their limitations before casting aspersions. Every year. Personally, I agree with Denich:

Well if I can pick one from the show it would have to be the Ron Dunn Shoebox restoration, in whole the original build(s) and the Shop that brought it back...

  26. This slightly depressing analogy, made my day. When the money is all spent and the trophies are dusty, the one's who enjoyed the show are the winners.

  27. But I think that is the biggest complaint about the winning car this year. Is this really "innovation and current style" when Bobby has been building essentially the same car for the last 20 years. It's also why I don't think a car like the Grasshopper (although very cool) should be in contention either because it really isn't anything new. I have nothing against high dollar build or street rods but it is kind of a let down when a car that looks A LOT like many others Bobby has built wins. I am sure the fit and finish was superb but there is nothing outwardly "wow that is different" about it to me at all
