I'm a big fan of the movie 'The Sugarland Express'. Most of this movie's charms are fairly obvious... Spielberg's a genius, Goldie Hawn is sexy as hell, there's the obligatory overblown car chase stuff, etc. For me, though, a big part of why I dig this movie so much is the nostalgic feeling I get from seeing all that 70's Texas scenery... back roads, small towns, and real folks as extras. You know how it is. So, with Joyce out of town for the weekend and a bright, sunny Saturday at my disposal, I decided to dust off the '32 (and my Nikon) and take a little solo road trip. Having just recently re-watched the movie, my primary destination would be the town of Floresville, TX., approximately 90 miles south of Austin. More specifically, my target was the intersection of 3rd and G Streets in Floresville, because at that intersection sits one of the key movie locations from 'The Sugarland Express'... the house wherein resides Baby Langston, around whom the film's plot revolves. Secondary destinations would be whatever back roads suited my fancy, a burger and a beer when I got hungry, and whatever seemed sufficiently interesting to warrant a roadside photo. Anyhow... here's what I brought back. Hope you enjoy! The house in Floresville, as seen in the movie (1974) - The house now -
Thanks for the snaps of the outing. Need more like these on the HAMB nowadays. Ol' ride is lookin' good.
What's not to like, nice weather, tracing some history you enjoy,a cold brew and a burger and a sweet Deuce sedan,,,life is good! HRP
Hey Blake ... enjoyed your photos ... and the thought of a solo road trip. Swing by my place for beer the next time you're down this way.
That is a nice drive on a day like this. Did the same drive and them some back in August in my parts hauler, just ambling along taking two laners here and back roads there. Thanks for sharing!
Nice memories for me in your pics, used to live in S.A. and we would go to Wittes for steak twice a month, thanks again for sharing the trip and pics.
Thanks... this was my first time there, but I'd make the trip back. Like I said, really good food and really nice folks! Thanks for the kind words, fellas!
Hi Blake, enjoyed your pics and story. Now I'll have to find and watch the movie to fill in the gaps.
Thanks for the kind words, SWIFTY... and great to hear from you! That movie's a good one... it's very 'Texas'.
That's funny. Having grown up in San Antonio, my first reaction to the title of this thread was: "Who the Hell makes a road trip to Floresville?!?!" Cool pics. Thanks for sharing 'em.
