Here's the progression (R-L). Shape on bench grinder, 80 grit (da), 600 grit (da), polish with buffer. 004.JPG

You have to "melt" the repro knob off the repro crank handle. This reveals the shaft that you need to mount the knob to. 005 (5).JPG 007 (2).JPG

You'll find out real quick if the glue used to laminate the plastic will hold up once you press on the knobs. Size of hole drill is real critical as you probably already know.

The hole in the knob is not quite half the size of the shaft. I get the tip of that shaft cherry red with my torch. As soon as the cherry red is gone, I force the knob onto the shaft with a steady motion. When everything cools down the shaft and the knob are 'welded' together. 008.JPG

Thanks everybody. Here's the lighter and the headlight knob. All different size shafts and problems to solve. Grandma just got her new knee, so it's going to be hit and miss for awhile as I do my 003 (2).JPG 005 (5).JPG duties for the old girl.

Way cool, Jerry! The little things like dash knobs are kind of fun, huh? Now I know how to put the new knobs on door handles, etc! You've taught us so many things in your threads that surely they'll be used for reference time and time again. Thank you so much for taking the time to share each process! It's greatly appreciated.

  23. Great work Jerry! Happy New Year! Take good care of momma....the car can wait. First things first. :)

Devil, when I show/explain how I do something, my goal is to portray it in such a way so that the average skilled guy can grasp how to do it. I try to make sure (earlier in this thread) how and where to get the item's/supplies to make it work. If you will try to do this you will discover that you can. It took me a couple of failures to figure out what wouldn't work, but after that I was sailin'.
