Projects My 36 ford project. Or how to ruin a perfectly good car

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by the man, Mar 30, 2014.

  1. I would love to drive it in bare metal. But this thing looks like an old quilt. It's close to 50 separate fabricated pieces. As much as I would like to believe my metal work is top notch. That's not the reality. Not that it's a mud bucket or anything. I did skim and block it. Frankly I wouldn't brag about what I've done. But for a air conditioning service guy it ain't so bad. It's Kind of like a middle-age woman. They look all pretty dressed up but once you get them naked you can tell there's been some work done.

Great work. I was wondering Did the gauges fit directly into the 36 dash if so what brand, and did you make the top rounded piece of the chassis x member for the tranny and if you didn't who sells one with that high of a opening?

  4. I made the dash from scratch. I couldn't find any gauges that fit without modifying the sedan dash I had. I am using Stewart Warner's. The x member was in it when I bought it. The top hoop was installed by previous owner . It's made by a well known rod shop frankly I think poor quality. I'm going to building all new x members and rear crossmembers.

So I got my frame table built and got the frame all set up. I has all the typical 36 ford rust. But not in to bad of shape. It's a little twisted. Ill be replacing the read crossmember and xmember. As well as trying to make the mustang II look like it belongs there.

Now I'm not one to criticize someone else's work as most of mine is sub par. but if your going to box your frame you might want to fix the dents first. I got the front suspension out. Now I will try to make it pretty.

....and how much did the 'three fingers' help.;)

  10. It was more like six fingers. Today I will be rechecking my math. These are some preliminary drawings of my motor and trans mounts. I will cut some test pieces week. I'm currently still working on my front framework.

Wow. This is sure coming out nice. You The Man, and Kiwi Kev have inspired me to try this on my sons 37 4 door. I hope I can talk him into this but he has said "NO" more than once. I would go a Vert with a Carson a like to have roll up glass. I'm not sure how that would work on the A pillar.
Your doing a fantastic job. Totally amazing workmanship.

  12. If you remove that rats nest I'm gonna call the PETA folks and have you shut down! Seriously, nice work my friend. Keep, posting.

  13. This is where I recommend that you don't. It is a stupid amount of work. But if I was you I wouldn't listen. The best thing you can do is ding a original you can use as a buck. If not at least one you can get patterns off of. I really can't stress enough about getting a good buck. I've done 2 of these. Trust me. If you're I little timid perhaps a one off roadster pick up would be easier. Once you start there is no turning back. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1418576561.858579.jpg

Ya, I understand. I'm working on an F100 mild custom and getting the 37 on the road. I have been looking around for the rear of a 37 vert for a bit. Behind doors back would be great but no hurry I want to at least get the heavy work done on the truck and on the road 1st
I love these type build treads.

Currently working on my rear kick up. Need to cut out a few more pieces and hopefully install this weekend

  16. Got some more frame parts cut out today. my center boxing plates and the rest of my rear kick up. And some other motor mounts. Still in the learning curve of this thing. but it's so far and good investment ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1419114261.148195.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1419114294.170295.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1419114310.911548.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1419114416.843639.jpg

Also got my front Frame done still needs a little finish welding and clean up. It wasn't exactly what I envisioned but it'll work it'll get me 2 inches lower. Also this week I scored a free portable air conditioner for the garage. Somebody threw it away because it did not work. Luckily for me I'm in air-conditioning repair guy. So a little dumpster diving and five minutes worth of work and I got it running. Freebee

Crazy how sometimes someone will post a picture of something, and all I can see is all the cool tools in the background lol ...
    Great work,

Hey Man- frame is looking nice, can't wait to see the rolling stance. Gotta love the perks of the job..... Right place at the right time. One of my favorites is my Hankison refrigerated air drier

  22. I know I'm a total scrounger. Definitely a perk of the job. I've scored some pretty good stuff. I got into air conditioning 23 years ago on accident. It's been good to me. I honesty couldn't imagine doing anything else.

I got my rear frame kick ups in. I cut them on my plasma table. They add 3in of axel clearance. It's enough to lay the frame out if needed. I've got ce leaf springs that are brand new. So I'm kinda committed to using them. The problem is the hang way too low. So I'm frenching them in for more clearance as well as lower ride hight. Working out really well. Hope to mount the springs this week. I will be offering a slightly modified version of this Soon.

Ive always kinda wondered when people box the frames in like this, are you doing anything for rust control,
I was thinking if you boxed the entire frame, maybe you could drill a hole some where and pore it full of rustoleum and role it around,

  25. That's my general plan. I haven't blasted the frame yet. I'm replacing most of it. Once I'm done I'll blast it and spray the inside with a little rustoleum. Well it's at least my plan.

  26. You my man are a master metal man. Keep it going as we are all tuned in on this build.
