    Hi all;

Need to get some more eyes on this blower. The seller (fellow hamb'r) and myself both thought it was a 3-71.

I let my excitement get the better of me and didn't notice in the pictures in the ad, but when I got it in hand the telling features are straight two-lobe rotor, cast iron (or steel) body, steel rotors....slightly different shape on the housing....weird little oil drain (supply?) port in the side...

I have a hard time thinking it's just an industrial blower given the really detroit-esque appearance and mounting flanges... maybe it's an early, obscure version?

    Any ideas?

    -Mike

Industrial would be my guess. There are a lot of different types of industrial roots type blowers.

The case looks 3-71. Everything else looks like an industrial air compressor application to me.

Could be off another 2 stroke diesel, not G.M. Bolt markings look to be metric. Rotors are probably too heavy for any kind of performance use.

  5. These were often used in the insulation industry to blow loose-fill into attics from trucks.

Maybe at first glance, but not if you look at a 3-71.

Exactly! It's so close....that's what's confusing me. I'm no stranger to industrial blowers; usually much larger ones but they typically have an ANSI flange or NPT threads for connections.....not something that looks like it belongs on a diesel.

    Some sort of knockoff?

    It's a 53 series blower, not a 71. Looks like a 4-53.

  10. but would that have metric fasteners?

53 series don't have a flange on the bottom, do they? And they have thru bolts?

Good eye Jim. I worked on Detroit Diesels back in the seventies and eighties. I never saw iron rotors in any blower on any two stroke Detroit.

Yes sir. 53 series blowers mount with through bolts, no mounting flange.

Hope everyone's holiday is going well so far!

I was able to find good pictures of one other engine similar to that one. A Nissan UD5...I think. That other forum seems to have some info floating around so I'll throw the pictures out there and see if A) anyone recognizes it, 2) maybe some measurements to confirm, and D) if anyone has a use for it.

Hopefully I can unload it one someone who can put it to good use and I can resume my hunt for a proper 3-71. (That isn't priced unreasonably.) If I have to keep it maybe I'll turn it into a garage exhaust sucker or something...

Thanks again all!! Have a happy new year!
