Here's a shot of my disguised small block 400, seldom detected. It seems most 55-12 001.jpg people just go by their first impressions.

  13. ^^^^ That's cool as hell!^^^^^^^^ If I knew how to do what you did, I would build a small block for my 55 rather than spend twice the money to build the W motor I have.

  17. Utah - That's a damn good sham! IIRC, the 400 was externally unique with it's 3rd freeze plug. Don't think the W had one in the middle like that

Capture.PNG The funny thing is .. people over think the valve cover deal. They want to believe I somehow adapted a 409 valve cover to fit the small block head and then got it to seal up and not leak oil and so forth , but in reality there is a stock steel small block valve cover underneath the 409 one. That's right, the 409 cover is literally sitting on top of a stock valve cover. Then I tacked some sheet metal shields to the 409 cover to simulate the cylinder head and painted them orange and screwed some bolts into the holes. Because the 409 cover is taller, there is even enough room for a breather hose to be routed out. The 409 cover is a loose fit on the small block cover so I used some aluminum tape to attach a small piece of rubber hose to the small block cover to act as an interference spacer that allows the 409 cover to be a press fit over the top. They stay in place well and don't rattle but I suppose if you tipped the car upside down they possibly could come off, but of course at that point you've got more to worry about than the valve covers falling off. Once you show people what you've done, it becomes obvious to them and they're disappointed its not a real 409, but I've had real 409 owners come up and start talking "409" with me so you could say it does fool most of the people most of the time. Of course now that the secret is out everyone's going to be doing it . I say go for it!

Your 100% right. Even I have had to take a second look with some of these SB Chevy's with Olds valve covers.
I put a 5.0 motor (347 stroker) in a Factory Five Cobra I put together and 90% of the people who looked under the hood took it for a 427 Ford ( even some of the Ford guys).

  20. Utahvette, I can't believe you spilled the beans! Great job on the Vette too. Can't believe you pulled it off on that budget. Hats off to you!

This was my favorite fakeout to date. This is a single four barrel small block Chevy disguised to look like an injected Ford 406. I used a "Garlits Injection" fake fuel injection setup and with an Air Gap type intake. I ran the plug wires under the intake to the front and then back and down to the plugs. The ford surge tank hides the fact that the distributor is not up front and a hollowed out washer fluid bottle slips over the distributor in the rear. Once again the valve covers just slip over the stock Chevy ones. The breathers on the valve covers and the fuel filter are placed to hide where the base of the "Injection" meets the real intake manifold. I rigged up some convincing throttle linkage and bell cranks to make it look more functional. I also narrowed the carb linkage to fit behind the polished aluminum plates on the side of the injector. I took the T-bird to a big local Ford show and was approached by a photographer from Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Magazine . I thought I did a good job of holding a straight face when he said he wanted to feature my car in the magazine. Imagine my Fake fiberglass T-Bird with a disguised Chevy motor making into a Ford publication. I about busted a gut. He gave me his card and said he would call me as soon as the show ended. The call never came. I suspect he told someone in the know about shooting the car and they probably said "You mean the one with the Chevy motor in it?" At which point my chances for a feature article diminished greatly. Anyway , this one went undetected most of the time. t-bird engine 001.jpg 55 bird0005.JPG

  27. About 90% done (Installing harness in car now).........only 4 "factory" GM parts in/on the entire engine. Block, distibutor, valve covers, and 6cyl. water pump -all modified, except the valve covers. Every fastener (inside and out) aftermarket. 385ci "long rod" full roller stroker. I can't wait for spring!
