I have a set of 16x11 Halibrands on the Fly. The only tires I have been able to find are the 26x10-16 Hoosiers. I would really like to run a pie crust or something era correct like this http://www.mandhdragtires.com/12-00-16-nostalgia.html. The problem is, I am afraid with me running the 301, a 32 inch tall tire would just kill me off the line. That would be like a 6" jump in tire size. I am running a 301 with a glide, an 8" converter and a trans brake. I am running a 5.13 rear gear.
    Any suggestions?

  2. try radir tires. i think they make a 16 inch pie crust tire. mh makes a 16 inch smooth wall tire.

Depends on how it acts out of the gate Don. I still have some left usually. I just hate the tires on the Fly. They hook ok, but just look wrong IMO. I don't get a warm fuzzy with recaps blue. I keep looking at them, but have a nagging in the back of my mind that says no. Always follow your gut.

  7. There's some real nice calculators out there that will help you figure out exactly what the change will do.

If you want a taller tire and stay the same out of the hole, you'll need more in the gears. A deeper 1st or deeper rear gear.

Yeah, the calculator would help. I just don't wanna kill my hole shot for looks. I could motor up, but then it wouldn't be as cool to me. These parts I'm running are dads old c/gas stuff.

The Hoosier DOT tires work well but I don't think they have the look you want. A T400 has a lower 1st gear than power glide. That's what I use with a 31" tire but our engine combos are different.

Root, what about gear change? Go taller slick and possibly a 5.20 gear if its available. Or maybe try them and see, it might not kill your launch as bad as you think and if it does a lower bar change or movement may get you pointed skyward again.... Just something to contemplate

I stand corrected. I went out an looked at the size on my Hoosiers and they are actually a 28".

I don't have any adjustments. My rear axle us mounted solid.....just like the 60's Bro. I am running a 5.13 so the next step would be in the 5.83 range.

M&H made a piecrust 16" tire but don't remember how wide. My buddy had it on his Big John Mazmanian Willys clone and it looked real good. Try getting in touch with M&H and see if still available.
I believe the next ratio up from the 5.13 are 5.38's.

I forgot.. I knew that fact and didn't think of it..taller tires and more weight behind the axle will fix that... Lol
