So I started tearing into the engine last night. I bought a 88 f150 for 600 bucks a while back. It was a real good running truck ,fuel injected 302 with a m5od 5-speed. Had just over 115,000 on it. The truck was real beat up, so I scrapped the body and frame and made $235 of it . Since I have a good FMX auto trans I'll be using, I sold the m5od trans for $150. Just going to do a regasket and replace oil pump, water pump ,timing cover and chain. I also ditched the efi and going carbureted.

The only odd thing that about the motor that really had me worried was after I pulled the timing cover I noticed it had be patched with some kind up putty (jb weld maybe)? It looked as if something my have hit it at one time. Almost looks like the harmonic damper my have rubbed it at one point. After I inspected the back of the damper it had no marks on it, so I'm clueless on how this might have happened. Any theories????

Engine and trans all ready to mate up.. Just waitin on my flywheel/flexplate. Kinda was going for an old original styled engine on this truck. No shiney stuff. Probably after the holidays I can spend some more money on the thing and get it running.

Have about an inch of clearance between heads and fire wall. The stock 88 f150 oil pan clears the steering rack by an inch also.

Pulled out the stock seat from the corner of my shop to start tearing it down. As you can see it was heavily patched with duct tape. I got it to bare springs then pressure washed it. Going to go ahead and bolt it to the floor to get my floor shifter in the right spot.

I have seen that before. It's caused by failed thrust bearings. The engine will run and run well but the crank can slide forwards and backwards in the block enough to get into the timing cover. The one that I saw do this would loose oil pressure going up hills. The oil pressure would return when going down hill. That was the crank sliding back and fourth and blocking the oil passages.
You cannot check for this with the engine attached to the drive train as you are pulling against the weight of those components. With the engine secure and disconnected from the transmission, grasp the damper and pull it, then push it. There should be no movement. If the thrust bearing is bad, trust me you will know it.
Likely it has been repaired but judging by the "Bubba" repair on the timing cover. If it were mine I'd pull it and check all the main and rod bearings.

Wow! Good knowledge there, never would have thought of that . I did check the main bearings when I had the pan pulled. They looked ok. However the back of the damper didn't have any signs of marring. So maybe it was repaired. Also when I changed the timing chain I had to pull the damper off, I didn't notice any movement . Maybe I'll pull the engine back out and recheck...

Tom Monroe's book How to rebuild the small block Ford, goes over the procedure of setting the thrust bearings.

Thanks for the info! I separated the motor and trans last night.. Not so good news, looks like there's about 1/16 of and inch endplay in the crank. May just run the piss out of it till it quits
