My 30 sedan currently has a fiberglass 32 grille shell and what appears to be a home made insert. I'm in the process of a complete make over and I really like the looks of the 28-29 grille. I'm thinking of going with 28-29 steel grille painted to match and make my own insert to protect the radiator. I was looking at the coupes and sedans that Jason Graham has built and he has used the 28-29 grille in most all of them. I know the 32 is used by most but I just like the looks of the 28-29. I would appreciate any pics of your 30-31 with a 28-29 grille.
Its all going to come down to preference. I don't see a wrong grill shell out of those 28-32's. My choice would be with a 30-31 body, a '31 shell. I like the painted part at the top of the shell. the 28-29's are a little better looking but still would stick with the '31. Just my opinion. tim
I like to see 28/29 grilles on 28/29's and 30/31 grilles on 30/31's but not mixed.. If you have to, a 32 is ok on either...
What scrap metal said. 28/29 will just look wrong on a 30/31. Use a 30, or 32. They go with the taller cowl much better.
Count me three on the "NO" on a '28-'29 shell on a '30-'31. I LOVE '28-'29s on the cars they belong on, but once you start transplanting them to other stuff they look as wrong as salami ice cream. I think this has allot to do with the fact that this phenomenon has just started happening within the last ten years or so since the rat rod thing. Prior to that, you NEVER saw a '28-'29 shell on ANYTHING that wasn't '28-'29. Since you car is channeled, you'll need to drop or section your new '30-'32 shell, what ever you decide. Get the shell of choice, cut, chop, put it back together and do you modifications until you think it looks right, THEN STEP BACK 50' AND LOOK AT THE CAR!!!! Oh, and even if you don't intend to run a hood on it, grab some masking tape and make a hood, THEN STEP BACK 50' AGAIN AND LOOK A SECOND TIME. If the "hood" goes upward at all, stop and repeat the cut, chop, put back together thing again until it doesn't. Then, and ONLY then is it time to even think bout a radiator... Trust me on this one, as more beautiful cars are completely destroyed appearance wise by a terrible hood line than any other automotive styling malady. Even if it doesn't HAVE a hood.
See my avatar. 28/29 shell on channeled 32 with home made insert. Main reason, $25 for the A or $600 plus for a 32. Email me if you want more pics.
A-flippin'-MEN! Get the lines and proportions of the car looking right, THEN get a radiator that fits. Not the other way around. If cost is a factor, save up and get the right parts. You'll never regret it.
Personally I think not depends on the car. A chopped channeled fender less a could run a 29 shell but a mild car would need to stick With the 32 shell . I myself don't much like the 30-1 shell on anything but a stocker. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks Jim. That's also why I said in my opening post about the coupes and sedans that Jason Graham has built. I may also add he has won several awards with 29 grille's in 30-31 coupes and sedans.
The '28-29 Radiator shell looks great, there is something special about a properly nickle plated original. I can't picture one on a '30-31, the lines just don't match IMO. Bob
Well, I just made a very good buy on a very nice looking 1930 Grille on Ebay. I think it will look great on my 30 sedan build. I just didn't want to be like most and use a 32.
