Just about finished up with my MFI intake manifold for this supercharged flathead engine that will be powering a FED…. someday. Other than the top plate and welding, I cut, ground, filed, and tapped every piece by hand, what a pain and I’m not done yet. I’ll start out running Methanol but it’s jetted for a 20% nitro mix. I’m shooting for around 10-12 lbs of boost at 5500 rpms and will be backed up by a B&J two speed transmission.

I'm going with the much smaller D-1SC and even then I need to under drive it.

We'll see. Pro-Gram main caps. Running an oil line to the center main. Moldex 180 degree billet crank.

My father-in-laws motto is “I don’t what to buy it; I just want to borrow it”. Back in the mid 90’s he borrowed these solid machined billet heads designed by Virgil Hanson. He ran this best time in the injected fuel flathead, something like 8.48@155. When it came time to buy them, he opted to return them instead. Luckily for me Virgil still had them and I decided to buy them.

The chamber design is exactly what I was looking for with the main combustion area moved over the exhaust valve and accommodates a pop-up piston. Not much left for me to do with them except to find someone who can O-ring them, if it’s even possible.

Anxiously waiting for the Moldex crank, GRP rods, and billet cam blank I ordered to arrive.

Looking forward to further progress on this project. Any ideas as to cam profile yet? Nice work.

I need to find someone that can help me with the cam profile. Is it necessary to flow the heads before doing so? I want little to no overlap, 114-116 lobe separation, more duration on the exhaust valve, with lift probably not exceeding 0.450. The cam blank I ordered is oversize so I could run without bearings and up to about 0.500 lift. That's more than I want. Any assistance on a cam profile would be great.

Very cool project. Please keep us posted as the build progresses. I am thinking you should probably look into a girdle for the mains, especially with a 20% nitro load. Flathead Jack sells one, and I know there are others out there. Good Luck.

You can sort of see the girdle in this picture of Rick Schnell's 900+ hp flathead that I took at Brainerd a few years ago.

I gave a girdle setup some thought and called Jack. Jack doesn't make them anymore and just leave it in his catalog because he said it looks cool. Spoke to him at length on it and he pretty much talked me out of needing one since I'll be running a billet crank.

Very very cool project there Adrew:) Nice to know that there are more people out there with the same sickness, Flathead;) I would recomend that you use a girdle set-up to support the Moldex. I have the profile for my Sidewinder;)

    Thanks K,

I still haven't discounted the use of a support girdle and will be looking into what can be made to work with the aftermarket main caps I have. I'm having the crank snout lengthened an additional 2.25" to accommodate 3 pulleys I'll be running off of it, Moldex recommended the girdle as well as a front crank support system. I have time before I need to seriously think about this. Right now I'm waiting for my rods so I can move forward with getting pistons made.

I had the cam blank sent to Schneider and will see what Jerry comes up with for a grind.

Woo Hoo! The GRP connecting rods finally showed up. They're like little bars of silver, but probably cost more. Here's a picture of one of the little beauties next to a stock Ford Flathead rod. Now I can get started on ordering the pistons.

Your not messing around with those rods. Those are some pretty nice looking little chunks of aluminum. Keep up the good work.

Just found your thread. Looks like you have filled the block with something it looks like cement?

It was filled with aluminum about 25 years ago. Been sitting in my father-in-laws shop since then. If I were to start from scratch I'd use the much lighter epoxy we currently use.

Woo Hoo! Camshaft finally arrived yesterday and it only took 6 months. I had Joe at Roto-Faze turn me a cam blank then shipped off to Jerry at Schneider Racing Cams. Told Jerry the purpose of the build and they ground out this 180 degree cam. Crankshaft should be here in a few week and I can get back to building the engine.

I agree with the girdle, there is a shit ton of money/time in this build, why not spend a smidgen more for insurance
