I painted mine in my garage with BC/CC using an old "Hobby-Air" supplied breathing air pump.

Looks pretty good for a driver, I think.

I painted my son's wagon: HOK abalone flake over white with burple candy and red wine candy. Used a turbine HVLP sprayer I got used off eBay

In the early 70's, I painted a lot of motorcycles using a small craftsman compressor that came with a spray gun that could be used as a siphon feed or pressure fed, and a Thayer Chandler airbrush. Painted some in the driveway, some in the garage. I guess people liked the work.........I stayed busy.

In later years graduated to things with 4 wheels.

I never sprayed in a spray booth until the late 70's and the results were no better than a garage paint job. The chances of a cleaner paint job are certainly increased in a booth, but I personally think that a lot of the defects, dirt, fish eyes, etc... can be traced to the cleanliness of the car and the painter.

  16. Booth helps with bugs, overspray, safe evacuation of fumes, control of filtered make up air. Let a filthy painter in the booth with transmission fluid on his pants and watch what happens.

I'm not really ready to paint anything on Edith, but there's always other things to paint & it was actually warm enough to paint in my garage this AM. :)

I've been de-rusting some 40+ year old wheels for a trailer I plan to build this winter. They were OK, but a bit rusty with a few serious rust pits. The electrolytic process has its advantages: Electrolysis really cleans out the pits, but it's not a panacea. A lot of cleaning is still required to get good results & there was quite a lot of smut on the wheel that doesn't just rinse off.

This wheel was rusty and was poorly repainted in the 70's. This is what it looked like after 5 days in the tank, a dose of Zip-Strip, a couple more days in the tank, solvent degreasing, and a good burnishing with wire wheels, cups, sandpaper, scotchbrite & elbow grease.

Wet Rustoleum primer shot this AM:

(For some reason the reflections of my florescent lights came out very yellow in this pic, while the camera flash is white.)

Wow that primer looks glossy wet, but it's dead flat now boy!
I'm going to let the primer cure a few days before finish paint.

I'm gonna spray-bomb them with Rustoleum 2x Painter's Touch, in a nice bright glossy green.

I've used this before and it runs quite easily, so I'll probably have to shoot 10 coats at least.

Nice blue. I had a Ford painted about that color with white pinstripes. Neat combination.

  23. Way back picture of driveway painting, later painted the body in the same place; but after 11 at night, the skeeters and bugs had gone to sleep and humidity was down so the lacquer wouldn't blush (bottom was Centari).

    I love this thread!
It reminds me of chopping a bike in my spare bedroom, in some nice old farmhouse from the 20's.
I was painting, brazing, welding, cutting, grinding, etc, indoors, in a wood framed house with oak floors.
(I was not, however, arc welding, which would have been nuts.)

Wish I had construction pics of those days, but I was no photographer before the digital age.
I have no photos of my first 6 cars & only maybe 4 of my first 6 bikes. No photos at all of the custom paint jobs I did.

Nowadays you can take & post pics nearly as fast as thought. That part's changed a lot.

But the tradition of home-built jobs is pretty much the same except for the scale of things. There's a lot more of us now.

  25. I dont know if there is more of us or are we just more aware of how many of us there are?

I'll be using an HVLP turbine system :D So no compressor at all ;) :)
And my garage will be the paint booth.
Or a temporary tarp garage on the pad out front :)
