img004.jpg This was one of our early race cars. My brother Scotts weekend to drive. I think he was 17 yrs old. Didn't see many 427's with Stahl headers back then. The Ulrey Bros in Seymour In. helped with this one.

Tommyd - What strip was that photo taken at ?

I'm originally from Indy but was mainly a circle track type and that track doesn't look familiar.

Gary, The guy that owned the 54 Ford was Ted Wells, he was the shop foreman at Valley Head Service. There was a great article in Super Stock Magazine about the car. Ted was quite the innovator, here is the full story on the man and the car.

This car is just fantastic. Beautiful in person and great on the track. Happy to say I know the owner.

Also featured in Car Craft Magazine, the March 1971 issue. Lots of Wells' made pieces including a lower end main support "girdle". Listed as an AHRA D/Hot Rod Formula 1 (multiple carbs) which would explain the car's weight. AHRA's Hot Rod was roughly equivalent to NHRA's Modified Production.

You are correct, it was Car Craft who did the article. The best part, was about him leaving the line at 8200 rpms with that 352" engine!
