So the journey begins on another build. Using a 1931 Model A chassis and a 1929 chopped sport coupe. Intent is to build a pre-war racer to run on the dirt tracks of Pennsylvania and 2015 TROG. Plan to add some hop ups to the engine and do a small channel on this Berks County native body.

Tossing on this Winfield head 6.8:1 comp. Changing gears and planning to run a dual updraft intake.

Hi- looks like a good start. I would re-think the "small channel". It will be a lot of work and wasn't done very often on the early race cars. Remember you will need to lower the radiator also to have it look ok.
    Just my thoughts, Steve

Thanks modelasteve! Good insights. Yeah... I'm back and forth on the channel.

Started on the body work and patch panels. This will be an adventure.

Not much left to weld on but we'll get this old girl back in shape one patch at a time.

Starting to get cool up here in PA but it's great for welding. Fabricated the subframe for the body and mated the body to the chassis for the first time. Everything is lined up nicely and straight. Much more body work ahead, but the foundation seems good.

The previous Winfield head had a crack so that is out of the picture... non-the less, searching for more performance parts.

This is going to be a great project to follow.

  12. If you can wait a few months or so, Snyders might be making a run of repop cast iron Winfields (that actually look like the real deal). The current crop of repro aluminum Winfields are way off IMO.

Great insight gwhite. Yes, as I'm continually researching, it seams like the aluminum heads just don't hold up as well. I'll keep an eye on Snyders though.

Picked up these nos JD gauges locally from a Model M. Also using a WWII B-17 gunner oxy tank for a fuel tank.

Somehow I missed this thread until just now. It was great to see your project in person last Sunday, Dan.
    A bangers are so cool!

  20. Looks good! I agonized for almost a year over my dash...of course, reading @Ryan's posts on hot rod dashes didn't help :)

Some finished dash pics. I always add a location to mount the fuse/bus board and to keep wires up. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1415938466.796015.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1415938477.246451.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1415938490.112759.jpg

Thanks Ryan... I enjoy looking at cockpit when driving. Adding some support to the cowl section. Not much to work with but we'll get this old Berks County body back on the road and dirt tracks. TROG 2015... Here we come.

Neat dash...did you realize it's a lot like the one in the Scritchfield/McGee '32?

Thanks Bruce. No I didn't... I'll have to check that one out. I was just trying to come up with something clean that incorporated a steering column mount.
