They were cut into the top part of '52 Caddy bumper. I wanted the fender to stay clean.

  3. Well, it's Monday and I got the drive the Merc to work today, first time in over 3 weeks since it has been in the shop to find a mysterious highway vibration. In celebration, how about the only known picture of my dad's '51 Merc from 1959. Taken at their "cottage" (it was a trailer at the lake), dad is on the right and one of his high school friends is the guy on the left. It was a 4dr, but he got in an accident shortly after getting it, so rather than put it back stock, he started doing a few things to it. Noticeable on this pic is the '53 Chevy grille. Thanks dad for making me the kustom nut I am! :)

What a kool pic, I thought it was you sitting on the right. I didn't know that your dad had owned a Merc....

Below is a Merc that I took a picture of in Festus, Mo last weekend.

Speaking of flames - one good thing Doc, not too-ooo many '48/49 Cads get flamed and there's a reason for that...here's one from my Cad archives...can't say I like 'em that well..,.

    Some tasteful flames. IMAG0193.jpg

  14. That is a very nice clean car. I am not a fan of louvers on a custom so I am not digging the hood and I always find that nothing on the a pillars (mirrors or spots) makes Merc's look a little street roddy but the rest is tasty.

  15. Yeah, I'm with you there. Funny story from today: I drove the Merc to the parts store this morning to get a carb rebuild kit and a few odds and ends. I walked out and got in the car and the kid that helped me ran out to tell me one of the parts I ordered would be in later today. He sees the Merc and starts asking a few questions then says he needs one just like this….same color and same flames! LOL. I told him when I repainted it, I would save this paint job for him in an envelope and he can unfold it and stick it on a Merc of his own one day. LOL

I concentrate too much on our kustom flaws and I forget how lucky we are to be driving a Kustom. Even
though it was real foggy this morning I still had fun driving the Merc to work.

I've often envisioned a paint job I like simply being pasted over my car...except, none of the contours would match and then I'd have to stretch and pull the paint to get it to fit...and it never does...!!! However, these days one can get that same "feel/look" with vinyl...here in Denver they're wrapping Mercedes coops (among others) with Pearl White "paint" and "Carbon Fiber" vinyl...from 20 feet away you don't know if it's real...!!!

  21. Hmmm….wonder if I could get a Hirohata Merc wrap…..that would solve a lot of issues and save a whole bunch of time doing body work. LOL

Well DocD, according to the company...the body has to be smooth...as in not primer (that eliminates Mick and his Merc) ...so you qualify there (I was going to have the '60 Chevy wagon 'wrapped' in Champagne and Root Beer vinyl but they told me it wouldn't stick to 'patina'd' paint)...and after hearing how much it cost -around 2-3 grand, I gave up on it...it stays patina...!!!

I can check for you and see IF they have those Hirohata colors in stock...

Car ended up in hugo minn. for awhile and was owned and restored by Sterling Ashby aka "Mr. Merc" (one super guy!! sure miss him)
he sold his merc parts business and retired and I believe he sold car as well, I remember it being advertised and that's been close to 10 years ago, I haven't seen it or any info on it since.

Wishing I was on the salt watching some fast cars go by me!!!!!!!

  27. Wow! For that, I can paint it myself. LOL Of course, taking the time to build all the scoops and fit the Buick trim might take a minute or two, however. ;)

I appreciate talent it took to do the louvers but I would not like staring at it from the drivers seat.

Mick, you would hate driving a louvered car on a rainy day in bumper to bumper traffic. Especially with the amount of rain we've had lately in the Midwest.
