Customs Round 2! 1940 Buick Super. Kustom

Maybe missunderstood u "get rid of da hood"! Somewhere on H*A*M*B there is a pic on Pissano/Ogden -41 Buick when Barry Mazza ownes it with hood open at carmeeting. Really admire the white firewall with gauges and chromed windtunnel for radiator. Just an imaging from me! Sorry,bad spelling.....

Well moving on back. Time to change the rear wheel wells and make some flush mounted skirts. I first made a cardboard templet and held it up to check if I liked the shape.

I cut it out and made a new lip that I would weld onto the fender. I also cut out the wooden bucks that I would used to hammer out the shape of the skirts.

A lot of time on the shrinker and stretcher but I got them into place

A little more work on the skirts and they will be done. Cut, weld, repeat.

I'm going to bubble them out a little more towards the bottom but all in all I am happy. These are my third set of skirts I have ever made and I think they turned out the best to date.

 

jocktherock. I'm going to keep a hood. I'm just skipping it for now. See my 40 has a butterfly style hood. Which I hate for so many reasons. So my plan is to make it a regular style one piece hood. That opens up like a standard hood. That being said I am going to take it out to my buddys hot rod shop and enlist him to help me on it. The geometry is way over my head. Thanks for the pics, that car is awesome.

 

I see,must calm down myself! You know,i got some ADHD disease when i follow a cool Buick built thread... It starts like a rollercoaster-ENOUGH!!!...... and i should join "americana" lessons in school,but wtf only live once! When making the overall shape of the skirts, was it just from your eye, to get a particular look or was there a particular size you followed? can you post pics of the backside / edge of the skirt? I am about to start this process and yours look good.

 

Voh, well mainly my eye. I kept the stock shape in the front. Then I played with how I wanted it to look towards the back. There was a factory brace on the fender in the back. So I also kept my new wheel well before that. I didn't want to loose the factory fender shape.

I'll have to take them off this week to take a picture of the back side. I used 1/4" rod that slides through holes on the fender to hold the top in place. And I used 1/4" bolts on each on the bottom to hold them on.

Time to get the rear bumper on. Again I am using a 41 Cadillac bumper for the rear to match the front. I am still on the hunt for the bumper guards so if anyone out there sees some help a guy out.
The stock Buick bumper brackets ended up working with little modification. I did pie cut the bumper in a couple of spots, this way the bumper would fit closer to the body.
I made new bucks and made a pan in the back just like I did in the front.
What do you guys think? Thanks

I tried a 41 caddy rear bumper on my car and it looked like ass. Your pie cutting the bumper to match the shape of the car looks awesome. I ended up using a 41 front bumper in the rear and am happy with it.

skooch, I was going to use the front on the back first. But I figured I owned it so why not try cutting it to fit first. It took a day but I'm glad I got it to work. Your wouldnt have the bumper guards and want to sale them??????? Thanks for your comment.

Thank you. I'm thinking a really dark blue. I'm going to primer it with a blue tinted primer first and make sure that is what I want to do.

So on to more boring but important items. I mounted the gas tank. (Which is a 65 mustang tank) And I made the mounts for the two 5 gallon air tanks, the compressors, and the battery hols downs.
