I have this .060 over 324 Olds, along with an Isky 505 Magnum cam kit, complete with rockers, pushrods, lube and decals. The kit was purchased in '63, and is IMG_4978.JPG IMG_4979.JPG new in the box. I have a question for Tony, will the rockers clear my Edelbrock valve covers ? George, I sold the OL 496 and kept the 396, thinking it might be a little more "street friendly".

Mine will no problem..... Isky's will hit..... Some grinding and favor the cover towards the intake side when bolting it on....

picked up this '63 394 a few years ago, found it at a 4x4 swap meet for $400.00
came with a stock intake, 4GC, starter, alternator and 4 speed Hydramatic.
put some dress up stuff on it I had laying around, snapped this picture
and shoved it to the back of the engine pile

a week ago I finally pulled it out of the corner and opened it up,
pulled the heads and pan and found this

    stuck a cam in it

fired it up Saturday and ran the cam in with a single four barrel, stock exhaust manifolds and stock distributor.
    runs good, sounds good.
going to try to find time to put the dual four and magneto in it tomorrow.

Which rockers are those? Interesting exhaust timing.

McGurk rockers, Tony's solid lifters and heavy wall push rods.
Cam went in straight up putting the intake opening a half degree earlier that the cam card spec, didn't touch the assumed stock springs, little less valve lift than the card with less than the 1.8 spec rocker ratio.

Thanks Paul. Have you tried any cast valve covers on this set-up to see if they clear? Are the center-bolt heads narrower across the valve cover flange?

The stock covers do just clear, only cast covers I have for the '94 are the Offys.
I may have something for your '24
I'll see what I can dig up.

Based on this, I'm thinking the stude rockers will probably clear with some minor grinding. They have less bulk on the pushrod side than the McGurks in your photo, especially on top where it matters...

clearing the covers wont be your biggest issue George....... The fact that the adjuster angle is totally screwed up for an Olds application should be your first concern.....You will find once you labor through getting them on the shafts and on the engine....That the pushrod and the cup will be at a approx. 15 degree angle .....trying to shove the adjustor sideways ...and it breaks them.....and the pushrods will be bound up in the holes in the heads..... The geometry is wrong....

Sure we have first class valvetrain pcs for our vintage stuff............BUT

Id rather see a guy whos playing with vintage powerplants on a budget use stock rockers... correct length pushrods on a hyd cam ....

Seriously, the photo of the rocker you posted has me questioning the stude rockers. Maybe I'll go with stock rockers and a hyd. cam.

Maybe that's a better option.........Cause It really pains me to see people scab stuff together to save a buck.....I don't like what a good paint job cost......But Ive no business aiming a spaygun at a quarter panel...... So I stick to what I do know........

  26. George, I have a few burn scars still from fooling around with rockers! I ended up borrowing a set of McGurks from a 371 to get the engine running in the end.

'64 Chevy II 283 block to 4" . '65 327 internals, domed pistons, '65 fuelie heads blended bowls 2.02/1.60's, '57 dual quad stuff, M20 Muncie and a 4.11 posi. Gen driven tach. I've been piecing this all together for over 25 years. I may run out of time, but at least I'm able to drive it now. The plastic line was a temporary pressure gauge thing. This thread is great!

Nothing personal against Tony, but I have been at this for 40 years, and over the years I have had a LOT of guys with some nice new shiny parts in thier hands tell me "That wont work, you need THIS!!" I have heard it so many times, I pay about as much attention as I do when "Bhinder Shingh from Bangalore" phones my house at 8 pm and tells me he needs my credit card info to fix my computer. Blame it on BS overload. My response is SHOW ME. Tony showed me what I needed to see.
I dont have the olds engine yet, (working on it) but when I look at the photo of Tonys rocker, its pretty clear that once I started mocking stuff up, I would have been discarding the stude pieces.

  30. JohnnyD - WOW! Looks like it was put together by GM. Yesterday. Beautiful.
