So yesterday was a big day. Having been aware of this car for nearly 10 years, I saw it advertised on CL. After some negotiations with my wife, amazingly she green-lit the negotiations with the seller. Basically, I wanted to trade my '49 F1 (plus cash), so emails and phone calls followed, and the deal was done yesterday. I fired up the truck (and as they always do when they sense they're on the way out, she ran beautifully. Long story short - took the truck to the seller, test drives on both vehicles, deal done, and I got to drive home in Paucho's chopped '41. In some ways, the car returned to its birthplace as my neighbor Laurie had chopped it years ago in a garage across the street. And now here it sits. Needless to say, I'm totally thrilled with it, and any plans I have for it are easy and fun. I'll upholster the trunk, touch up a few chips here & there, get a couple of extra sets of hubcaps for a quick and easy change when the mood takes me, but mainly I'll just slink around in it grinning like a fool. My thanks go to Brian for making the whole process so pleasurable, and of course for building it in the first place. And I'm glad I was able to give him a bit of cash to find his upcoming '36 3W, which - if this '41 is anything to go by - will be totally killer.
Interesting, that. I think of the '41 as THE quintessential sled. For me, it beats the '49-'51 Merc, hands down! TonyVan, the F1 in your Avatar is also a gem. I'm glad you found another rung to step up the ladder! Your '41 is a beauty! Plymouth bumpers, shortened side trim, and all. I even like the headlight rims and door handles! What makes it go?
Thanks all - for me, the '41 is just under the 39/40 Merc and the 36/35 3W, so I feel I'm at the top of the hill... This one is all pre-49 externally (radials aside), with the '49 Plymouth bumpers, 48 Hudson tails and a '46 Merc dash. And I too like the non-frenched headlights and stick door handles and mirrors. Under the skin, it runs a 351windsor and an AOD trans with a 9" rear end. And a Nova clip. I'd love to put an Olds or Cad motor in, but then we're into a whole load of building (and $), and that would take away driving time and gas money. kanks
41's are my favorite!Chopped and sleddin' makes em even cooler..More pics without the foliage blocking its beauty Please! Congrats! I am jealous!
Congratulations on getting this car. I found this picture a while back when searching for chopped 41 Ford coupes. Or possibly the use of 49 Plymouth bumpers. I don't remember where, but I do remember there being a discussion in regards to the chop....... To me this car is perfect. Well executed modifactions and proportions. I really like the use of the stock grill and the partial filling of the fender seams. As well as the side trim and door handles. And believe it or not, I even like the non-use of spotlights. Definately not a "Cookie cutter" Custom. Is that color a custom mix or is it Ford Washington blue ? May you and the coupe have many miles of happy motoring together. Torchie.
That's a beautiful 41. Congrats on picking it up. Have fun and enjoy. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
It's a standard Washington Blue. And I agree about the non-use of spotlights. I keep looking at it and thinking what I could do with it, and pretty much everything I think of just makes it less cool. So, no spots. No frenching. No removing the door handles. I may change the steering wheel, but I don't like cut-down repros, and a stock size will really affect forward vision. I will change the caps, I'll add some lap belts, and put in a seat squab in the back for the kids, but that's about it. I think Paucho hit it right on the head for me, so there's really only detailing, maintenance, and driving to do.
Good for you. It's hard to improve upon perfection but that never seems to stop us from trying. LOL Maybe some day a new paint job with a different color....... or not. If you can and want to please post up some pics of the interior. Thanks. Torchie.
