Seems I'm always changing, swapping or replacing my mufflers... and the slip joins rust up pretty quickly... anyone ever put grease on the muffler / pipe slip joints to make them easier to remove? What kind?

And no, the muffler bearings don't need grease .....

  2. Sounds like you need to use bolt on flanges?

What about a good quality anti seize?

Anti seize would be what I'd try. But I also know that if you get the clamp tight enough so it won't leak, then the pipes will be deformed so much that it won't slip off.

Bolt flanges are what I use on any exhaust system I plan to take apart.

  5. Bolt together flange is po-po, v-band clamps are quick, don't leak and only one bolt to undo.

I was going to use V band clamps, but couldn't find them in the 1966 Honest Charlie's catalog.

I use Permatex anti-seize on most all exhaust pieces.

You needed to look in an aviation Illustrated Parts Catalog. Or a real good surplus store. Or work for an airline. In '66 I was working for an airline.

  10. Walker used to have exhaust pipe sealer in a tube. Black gooey stuff that sealed and prevented rust fusion.

This answer is very clear, and was available to the general public at large.

Cat. copper anti sieze will do the trick.

  16. use "copper coat" antiseize

  17. The anti-sieze will work best if you clean the pipes first with some good prop-wash.

For a while, I used 283 rods for hangers for my 2" tailpipes. I did have tailpipe bearings.

The walker sealer would turn to carbon and seal the voids in the joint

You have personal experience with the effectiveness of V band clamps ? I'm going to start fabbing my exhaust system soon and have a box full of V band clamps.
I want to be able to take the exhaust apart in sections to ceramic coat the whole works.

It's an expression of doubt or disappointment used by elderly Greek women. There is, however, nothing on the profile page to suggest that Rodhotz is an elderly Greek woman :)

I did a 37 Packard 12 with the original and unmolested drivetrain. It had the 2 bolt clamps that are very similar (if not the same) as what's used on today's cars. 2 bolts that pinch a tube-shaped clamp with a small ridge around the center.

  24. Jeeze mines all welded solid. :(

  25. They work nice.
The band clamps also do a nice job, the come in over lap and butt. If I were building something that needed to come apart frequently, or modular I'd use either the v band or butt style clamps. If it were v band I'd upgrade the bolts too.

I have worked on turbocharged cars, running absurd boost (3-4 bar). If a v-band clamp will seal that, at that temperature, it will hold just fine in any lesser application.

If you just have to run slip fit pipes my vote is for copper anti-seize as well.

  28. remember the Y block fords? they had the crossover pipe up front and no clamp, did they use any antiseeze on that?

    Anti-seize it is!

  30. Yep use them all the time, on a few turbo diesels we are running over 100# boost and no problem holding, come time to disconnect just undo the bolt and that is it.
