Technical Got a new baby... Baby Hemi,

Just got this yesterday, a baby hemi. This is what I was looking for, before I found the 331 I put in my truck. A 1954 Dodge Red Ram Hemi, for my '36 red Dodge Ram pickup. If I feed it a six pack of Strombergs, and some 10:1 slugs, it should grow up a little. Then I can replace the SBC in my '40 Coupe with the 331 Chrysler from this Dodge, and have a pair of hemi powered Mopars.

I think it will be a much better match for the truck. Got the heads off, looks pretty good inside, it should rebuild just fine...

Question for you. I have a 54 red ram with a power flight tranny and I want to put another tranny with a park in it. What is a good tranny without having to do alot of adapters? I would like to just bolt up and go. Thanks for your help if you can.

The only trans I know of for direct fit is stock trans. But don't under-estimate that band brake on the back of the tranny. It's as good as 'park' when relined and adjusted. That transmission band brake was the strongest brakes on both my old Mopars, back when i drove them stock. Grabbed it quite often when trying to stop in traffic...
But therre is nothing wrong with the adapters made today, these hemis all came with transmission adapters from the factory, anyway.

 

Without adapters... All EarlyHemi (except the 51-53 331) and all of the pre-62 A-series (301-303-318-313-318-326) share the same block and crank design (as far as the trans goes).
This collection might provide a trans that you could use, but, as noted, you will still have the e-brake on the tailshaft. Not very svelte.

And now it runs!! This thing was really stuck. I thought I could soak it with all the recommended concoctions here on the HAMB, but nothing would get this one turning. I turned it upside down on an engine stand, and removed the rod caps last winter. All the pistons came out OK, (after ridge reaming) but # 5 & 7 wouldn't budge. Lot's more soaking from both sides, and a 2 pound hammer on a 2x4 finally got them out. I replaced those two.

Valves and rockers were pretty tight too, but most everything looked pretty good once cleaned up.

This Red Ram hemi will now be a display and cacklefest engine in my car barn, until I can find it a suitable car to put it into. Then I will give it a proper rebuild.
