Saved the best for last, This chute shot of Dean Lowe has been posted before, or one like it, but it shows a true street roadster that really drove on the streets (I got to sit in it at the Powerine station next to Bob's in Pasadena)...and it is Pomona in the old days with the trees still there.

  2. Yep, that's around May of '63. Kaye Trapp was there that Sunday shooting photos. He was driving the Grabowski built T touring. He asked if it was OK if he shot some pics of the roadster. He sent me about five really nice 8X10's. That's one of Kaye's shots. I sure wish he would have hung around. That afternoon we raced Bones in Maz's corvette for street eliminator. Both cars looked good in the sun with their Junior candy paint, and at the lights we both tossed the identical red white and blue Deist ring slots. And, and as they say, "the crowd went wild"!

But in 1967 I was making $1.40 an hour before taxes.

  5. But in 1958 my allowance was $5.00 a week. Just enough to ride my bike up to John's Hobby Shop and buy another AMT model kit, stop in at Caesar's Tacos and grab a Taco and small coke for lunch, and go to the drags at Pomona on Sunday. Yep, a few pennies left over. I would not trade those days for anything!

Back to Pomona, early '60s (?) I don't know either roadster, though the T bodied car on the left seems to have a Buick straight 8.

Braskett & Finders, maybe at Fontana? Chuck Finders was the master gasser constructor and Braskett would later partner with Gary Burgin in a funny car. Notice Henry's Machine Shop, which did drive train work, pretty good work.

I think that this is the No. 99 Racing Team, maybe from Massachusetts? Great example of a real competition coupe. 3692530.jpg

  10. Is there anyone that Chuck Finders didn't partner with?

I saw this car a few times on the west coast in the early 60's. I remember the paint colors and if you look close enough you will see an empty 'nitro' can for an injector scoop. Just loved it. It ran pretty well too.

Moody & Davis hit that 'Balony slicer' cable at the end of the strip and went right thru the fence. Also in the famous wheelstand shot with Frantic 4 at Pomona

  14. My ex-partner Dan Hart drove that car with the 99 racing team " The Nice Guy's" in the '60's

Thanks, Jay, apparently Don Moody was to be the regular driver, but Joe Purcell wanted a ride in it, and went off the track. The fuel Chrysler was from "Doc" McCan's fuel drag hydro, and McCan was at the track the day the car went off the end. Purcell's arm was so badly broken that amputation was suggested, but McGan was an orthopedic surgeon and worked at the hospital to save his arm. Joe was in a cast for what seemed like a year, but at least he had both arms! This story from Bruce Schwarz, on Don Ewald's site. Here is another picture racing Prudhomme in the old Ivo car at San Gabriel in '63 with Don Moody driving:

  16. It was Doc Magan. Mom took us kids to the Magan Clinic in Covina for years for shots and such. His hydro was called "The Golden Thing". What wasn't painted gold metal flake was chromed. A real show piece.

Thanks, Dean for the correction...if I'm not mistaken, the fuel hydro was featured in HRM...apparently the dragster was also supposed to be sort of gold metalflake, but it was a combination of gold and green, that's why Joe Purcell called it "gangrene" (after he crashed in it)

Looking at the Thresher special flathead rail it could almost be the old Monogram Models Slingshot with a flatty in place of the Hemi !
Oops after reading the caption I did'nt realize this is the car Monogram copied when it had a Hemi! They never gave credit to the real car thou.

Not a very clear picture, but still pretty cool, Bones (Balough), Durbach and Pisano racing Jr Thompson, track looks like Riverside.

    3837099.png

Groundshakers, usually driven by Glenn Way, chassis by Woody Gilmore.

    6645433.png

Kenny Lindley, track could be Bakersfield, given the expanse of asphalt, maybe the '59 Smoker's meet?

    7219243.png

Walker & Geary, I think. Back when lace painting was sort of popular. Track looks liike Irwindale. (Well, maybe not, another photo on Jim Sorenson's fuel altered site identifies this car as belonging to Jim Thomas, it changed its name from "Super Rat" to Genuine Suspension"---who knows for sure??)

All these from the George Klass collection, which he updates almost daily!

  21. Good to see the detail around the nose. Very few builders would take the time to create what appears to be a well-finished grill. Kudos to those guys.

  29. So do I. I'm trying to figure out where the mags are?

I like the car also, I hope somebody knows the story on it. There's one mag down by the fuel tank. Why no pulleys on the front blower? For some reason, I want to say that I read somewhere, the guy leaning on the back of the car had a hangover.
