Wanted to get feedback on the best rear end sizes for a shoebox. 8" or 9" and a width size too?

I have the original Fordomatic rear end (3.31) in my '51. It has had a 350 SBC crate motor rated at 335 HP driving through it for 20 years now, and about 50K miles. In that time it has broken one axle, which showed a casting flaw, but has otherwise been completely trouble free. Unless you have really serious horsepower plans, I don't think you need to replace the stock rear end in a shoebox.

  3. I modified a g body Chevy 10 bolt and redrilled axles for ford bolt pattern ! Works great and cheaper than modifying a driveshaft with the odd ford end!!!

I guess the most popular rear axle swaps on shoeboxes are 5 slug Maverick rear ends.
The width is pretty much same than its on the original axle and it should be a bolt on swap.
I bought a Maverick rear, but i cant say is it really a bolt on swap, because i havent change my projects rear yet.

  5. The stock rear is pretty much trouble-free unless you're planning on making serious horsepower.

  6. check out S10 4x4! 2wd are too narrow.

  7. A few Ford axles to consider. HRP

I have the stock rear end in my 51. The car was an original Fordomatic trans car also, and now has a 327/th350. I have been running the car this way and pretty hard for the last ten years, and have only lost the pinion yolk.
