Ford Y-blocks can go fast. This is from our last weekends race where we made a new European Record for y-blocks. Still 0.757 seconds behind current World Record... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=863lPyofU1Q It's a 292 cid engine with two turbochargers and Efi burning E85 refuel gasoline. This is a slow motion of the same run. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMMw1joPPqU&list=UUxZ94DRcBfpz0DstGIV1_QA&index=1&feature=plcp
Full 1/4 mile. We run 6.05 at 1/8 mile couple of months ago, but then we had no so much boost and start was with only 3500 rpm. Now we had 4500 rpm and a stage limiter working.
Sorry, if I was confusing someone. We have 4500 rpm at the staging line to get boost raising and revs are limited by Crane HI-6 ignition control unit simultaneously as trans brake is applied. Our max rpm was limited to 7000 rpm by Crane Xr-i module inside of the distributor. And neighbour, God will never get a chance to touch our ride .
Hollow Head, Who holds the world record? This dragster belongs to Bob Lindsay from here in Oregon. It is shown here with the injected engine, when he installs his "blown alcohol" Y-block, it has run in the 7's at almost 180!
Y-blocks have great potential. Even in this era they are real competitors if the engine work is done correctly and the drive train matches the power/torque out put. There is even a Y-block group that meets annually and has racing events. Fun time, good competitors and a lot of enthusiasts too. These 312's and 340's are just a sample. Normbc9
Bob Lindsay drove 7.966 with that dragster and our goal is to beat that record some day. Will it evr happen... who knows. But we sure have some more power to come after we get our heads O-ringed....
Here is the dyno sheets from last spring. We had to pull back when boost started to raise unexpectedly as we openet the turbo screw for 1/4 turn
After couple of disappointing years we finally got little progress. 8.644 / 245.03 is now new European Ford Y-block record. Still with E85 fuel.
This is my Scout running against the Y Block powered Thunderbird roadster. The roadster ran well but it was the phase on the back of it that got my attention - "Y Blocks - The trailing edge of technology" Good thing the roadster ran well as a minute later I almost landed on top of it when the wheelie bars broke and I swapped lanes with the front end 4' in the air.
"World" records are only important to 2 people. The one that has it and the one that wants it. To the rest it's great information. This is from someone who has a "World" record at Bonneville in a class only a few care about.
Bless the 'Y' block! When a young 'teen still in high school, Chevies were all the 'rage'..."Ford??? You drive a Ford???" I was 'shamed' in the San Jose area for working hard on one, a 292 'Y' in a '56 Ford convertible, T86 3 speed overdrive. I turned pistons around, c.c.'d heads, matched ports, selected a Cal cam/set cam timing, and a slew of other things, all with a factory intake & teapot carb. (lotsa work on carb) In 1959 my Ford was a Chevy Eater...Torque and RPM. Seems like light years ago... Fremont digs turned 92 in low 14s...mufflers & street tires...(C/stock) Got protested, wasn't s'posed to go that fast... Competition may not have been as 'stiff' then, but in 'popularity' it ranked right down there with Al Gore, whoever he was? Ex wife called it the 'White Rat', she loved Chevies and didn't even drive... (blind faith)
