Technical What would be the "era correct" intake for a SBC?

I wanted to run an exotic intake on my SBC (think 6 94's) but that's out of the budget.

So my question is what would be a correct aluminum intake manifold and carb if I wanted to keep everything pre '62?

The motor makes 380 HP so I'm trying to find something that will look the part and not kill performance too much...

    A C3B is probably a good compromise.

Two four intake with dual WCFB carbs available from 1956 on---bring a heavy billfold.

I had a C3B on a sbc years ago. Might have to revisit that one.

Would a tri-power move enough air and fuel to support that level of hp?

Edelbrock C4B was out before the C3B, C3B is a little better performance wise...someone here did a comparison.

A 1962 Corvette 327/340 hp aluminum would be a good choice.

  11. kreits with any variation of multiple carbs. Offy 2x4 with a pair of little carters or rochesters (4 jets).

Or if you got the gonads and the skills to pull it off a pair of crudly constructed sheet metal manifolds( yea a pair) like *these on my old ChetSmith 394 olds. ;)

    Cheap to build for sure.

*of course they are crusty, they have been under bench for nearly 60 years. :D:D

PNB, I have both of those. My day job is at a precision sheet metal shop as a production engineer. Maybe I could do a manifold. But would it run well? That's my concern.

Completely self serving, but I have about the nicest C4B that I have ever held in my hands on E-Bay at the moment. That and an Edelbrock carb with the stupid tag removed and possibly dulled down a bit with some "Super Clean" type spray cleaner would probably do the trick quite nicely.

I picked up an old Edelbrock C3B with the oil fill tube at an estate auction earlier this spring. For 20 clams, it'll go on something Hamb friendly in the future.

So the edelbrock style carb is correct for that era?

Ya, you'll get lots of dissenting votes around here, but the honest to god truth is that the Edelbrock carb is basically the same thing as the old Carter AFB of the late fifties and early sixties. The biggies that the true traditionalists don't like is the bright red EDELBROCK name plate right below the air horn, and the new style tumble polish type finish. The name plate removes with about 17 seconds worth of carnage with a pair of small needle nose pliers, and the Chromey kinda look can very quickly be dulled by using a cleaner such as Super Clean that doesn't like polished aluminum in small doses.

I think this is a good option. I like edelbrock carbs for their tunability and the fact that you can buy parts for them at chain auto parts stores. I also loke the idea of de-shining them...

Not really, unless you insist on the correct Corvette carbs. I'm in the midst of piecing the whole shiterree together right now, including 9 fins. Not as cheap as a performer rpm and eldeebroke afb, but not as much as a OL496 and carbs...;):D

Yup, C355B and three rochesters is cheaper than the corvette intake and 2 wcfbs by a large margin, and works good, properly set up will outperform the c4b and afb combo.

You can do a little work and get it close. This is a "modern" AFB, made by Weber with the Carter name in the 90s.
