There are a lot of folks that belong to the Gas-FX group that frequent this site. I'm sure you'll have a answer soon.

how was this car e/gas legal with such a drastic wheelbase alteration? judging from the pic it has to be about 10" on the front and rear. can the NHRA rulebook experts chime in here?

Who cares? That is a bitchen car, back when you could build crazy shit like that and run it. Not all tracks run on the NHRA rules, Especially back then.

yes that is a cool car, but it is not a gasser if the wheelbase has been altered.

You know, I wanna say that Kenny Bernstein started out with a pretty radical Stude like that one. Anyone?

I remember one similar, could be the same one, that used to run at Union Grove and, or Byron dragstrips. I was pretty young at the time but I left a big impression.

It's quite possible that it ran at an independant track that wasn't sanctioned and had their own rulebook, one with some "gray areas"
in it. Racers are famous for stretching and bending the rules !:D

I think the altered wheelbase is part optical illusion based on teh axle drop and the set back of the engine and the position of the headers.

The Gasser class rules allowed for a fair degree of engine set back in the frame, so it makes the distance for the axle location look longer.

rear wheels look about in the right place radius may have chpped out some body in fornt of the rear wheels.

I always look at anything that has to do with Studebakers..what struck me about this car, besides being a gnarly, slick wrinkling, wheelstanding, bad ass lookin car, is it is the same color as my 53!..only on steroids..I hope this car is still healthy and burning rubber somewhere..anyone know?...

It was my dad's car. He ran a 327 hilborn injected. He raced at Oswego Dragstrip in Illinois. The wheelbase is altered, the rear axle is moved forward, if I remember correctly 18"
They made a fiberglass body for it and it was named the Grapes of Wrath. They sold the steel car and last time he saw it was in Lisle/Warrenville Illinois and had a Hemi in it. I'm currently trying to track down the car, any suggestions on how to do that ?
I also think the Miss Deal was a model of his car....you don't see any 53 Studebakers with this alter wheelbase and Miss Deal matches it to a tee!

Yes the topless is the "same car" well at least the same owners! They made that fiberglass body in a garage with the knowledge of an older boater friend.

    No that racingjunk isn't it.

I think the similarities may be coincidental. As far as I know, "Miss Deal" was based on a 1960 Corvette chassis, with a Hemi motor. The body was a post model, not hardtop, and the rear wheel wells had a different radius. But, who knows?
