    And again.....
    Nice work, any updates?

  3. Thanks you for all the props and kudos. It really is nice to feel the appreciation for the time and efforts put into these builds!

WELL! After too long and many distractions I have finally been able to spend some time with the Coupe.

The chassis is roughed together only lacking detailing. smoothing welds plumbing brake lines etc. So it has been moved to the barn.

I have moved back to body work! The Body overall is solid BUT there are many areas that need to have corrections done due to my inexperience with metal work when I first took a saw to the body over 25 years ago.

There are also some areas that Mother Nature decided she wanted more than me so patching and metal finishing are the next phase I plan to tackle. I figure to start at the front and work my way down and back.
With that in mind i started to patch the windshield cowl filler piece

Here is how it now looks

some of the rot I removed

and how the patch is coming along.

It still needs a little welding and filing...

I am also filling the seams at the joint between the cowl sides and tank top...

As just about everyone on this thread..I to am starting a 30 build..I really enjoyed reading your write up and just might use it as my how too. With a few variations :).

    Excellent work..

  6. As can be seen in previous photos the drip rails were no longer on the body. This was a result of misguidedness on my part. As I stated early on in this thread I was smoothing the body.

Since I have found the light and am returning this Coupe to a more traditional look the drip rails had to find their way back. SO

I cleaned the surface where the rails belong and drilled holes to allow me to plug weld the rails on from the back side

I failed to take photos of the clamping stage BUT I used a good number to hold it tight to the body. The following are the results. They need to have the ends finish welded but they are on and I think looking good!

looks good! did you have to bend the drip rail or did it come bent?

  8. We had to bend them to fit.

cool, I had to bend mine too, how did you bend yours? I melted lead into the channel and they bent real nice, then I melted the lead back out.

  10. We made a form to the radius we needed added a little heat to prevent the channel from deforming and moved it till it fit...

  11. Still on the body work. Correcting sins of my uninformed youth...

When I first installed the lower patch panels I overlapped the joints

AS you can see this left a severe step. I could have welded them out and added filler to blend them. It would have taken a LOT!

So I decided to slice them at the spliced edge

This allowed the panels to flow smoothly

After welding the panel has a much better fit.

After a little more finish work there will be VERY little filler needed. All four corners were repaired this way...

Looking good Tim. I'm happy to see you cranking away at it again.

Well worth the time to fit and weld for that kind of finish.

I wish I could go back in time and smack my 20yr old self in the back of the head for all the quick fixes...and too many other things to mention.

  17. Well the shitty weather has put the breaks on my shop build so I went to visit my Coupe. Here are a few pics of the replacement of my missing wheel wells...

Fabbed up some new stand-off flanges
    [IMG]

    welded them to the subframes

coated for corrosion protection before welding them

fitted them to mark the cut line

fitted them and tacked in place

After I finish welding them I will move on to the rear rolled pan...

    Yay! Progress!

I really enjoyed the way you pinched the frame rails way back when....

  20. Hearing the stories of ill fitting panels I made my own. Tail pan below the deck lid was roached so I started out by measuring and laying out the sheet

then using a step or off set die in the bead roller I started the lower body detail

then used the brake to return the bottom edge. I moved the apron back three times the thickness of my sheet to create a soft edge to the bend

I then using the brake returned the remaining edges

no pictures but I used the shrinker to blend the edges to match the body radius

then moved on to the rolled pan. Not many step pictures but I hammered and wheeled the corner pieces and slip rolled the center and broke the return.

now on to the tie in back to the wheel well area...

dig the rear roll pan: looks like it really belongs there.

great work with reassessing earlier work and changing it to suit your current vision. all too often that's missed in a long term build... know I've been guilty of that a few times.

    Nice work.. Coming along nicely...

  23. Excellent thread with step by step explanations. That's what one can only find on the H.A.M.B forum.
    Thanks Tim

Great to see progress on this build, that chassis turned out real nice. Bob

  25. Been awhile since I updated my build. Progress is slow but steady.

Header fill panel was roached on one side
    [IMG]

so I cut out the bad area and fabbed up a repair patch

I have tacked together my shock / headlight mounts.

  26. The trunk opening was badly out of shape so using a porta-power and come-a-long I pushed and pulled it into the correct dimensions. I now have a good consistent gap.

somehow the before bad gap images failed but they were bad!

Are you wheel wells a patch panel to the quarter panel? Did you make or buy them? All the wheel well patch pansI have found are just flat
