I don't know much about these, but it looks to me that the only way that rear suspension would work is if the engine/transmission/rear-end moved up and down as a unit with a pivot at the front mounts.

  4. I will echo everyone else - don't touch it. Find a buyer then buy a better starting point for your needs.

There is some history there that somebody, somewhere is looking for.

yep, leave it as it is, very cool. Mad street car like that if you can reg it, or sell it on and get what you want. Very cool.

Toss an old body on it, something like this

Then you'd have a great start

If your crafty, you could make yourself a home made body of sorts like George Ray's HotRod. Make it something that you can bolt on and off, easy to do.

    Take a look:

it did work well in the dunes, pretty much put it in second and cruise along, the nailhead torque and the stock WCFB carb where a good combo, little rough riding over the rutts but better with 2 people in it......yeah lot's of lookers

Leave it alone. There is plenty of other crap to chop up.

My grandfater was born and raise in Oceano and had one of the first dune buggies out there. Built out of an old star or something.

That is a piece of history and it would be ashame to turn it into some rat crap.

  14. That looks like a survivor and really is bitchin as it is. Dune buggys aren't my thing but I think it should be left alone. There is probably someone looking for your piece. And in my opinion there are far better street rod "starts" than what you have there. I would leave it alone and find someone to buy it and use that money to start a new car.

I would love to have one like it. Perfect for the area I live at.

CJ92345, I write the Old School Buggies article for Sand Sports magazine. I also have my own Old School Dune Buggies and Sand Rails page on Facebook (see link below). This is a fan base paged dedicated to preserving the history of old buggies and the people/organizations that paved the way for today's sand sports. Perhaps there is an opportunity to feature the buggy in Sand Sports or on my FB page. There are several thousand hot rod guys following the page along with many buggy people. If interested, you can send me an email at [email protected] or private message on the following FB link. Many thanks. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Old-School-Dune-Buggies-and-Sand-Rails/229443403847250

(tongue-in-cheek) I disagree......drop a smart car body over the back half. Just might be the right size.

Seriously.....the others are right. Leave it alone, sell it outright, or maybe someone else has a better starting point to swap it for.

Here's some great vintage footage of some in action from the 1969 movie Pit Stop.

    The action starts at 4:33....

When I was at El Mirage in May of 2012 I spent some time looking at one on those. I know it was nailhead powered and well built. I believe it was the same rig. It was for sale. Anyway I was impressed at the use of vintage parts and of how well it was built. There's a lot there for a traditional T bucket build but as others have stated "it's cool just the way it is".

I'd leave it as-is. By the time you got down to reworking it all, you could have just found a T or A roadster body, A frame, and built another car.

  25. The rear radius rods attach at a point that intersects the center line of the U joint

I've heard these referred to as doodle bugs. old timey and damn cool. I'm with those who say don't mess with it. But if it needs some mods in order to be enjoyed, so be it.
I would keep the 'flavor' of that old rig in mind, though.

With the west turning into a desert something like that might come in handy.

That thing is stupid cool as it is. If it isn't for you, turn it into money and buy a rod with the proceeds. That way you don't have to compromise.
