Projects 32 Sedan Lakester roof chop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by the metalsurgeon, Jul 16, 2014.

  1. Frame is the work of Gary Maxwell from Blackboard Hotrods, but you are correct in saying that Ionia had a hand in it. They supplied the boxing plates and made the RHD crossmember. Gary put it all together.

    progress....

Rebuilding original upper hinge platform to custom to take revised windshield angle.

    building door frame 'A' pillar
    modifying door top.
door opening and shutting with ease due to our hinge jig.

everything is tacked in place, and everything is now repeated to the opposite side.

and over to the drivers side.

    IMG_4403 - Copy.JPG

hinge before removal.Reason to adjust hinge pin angle to bring in line with lower hinge as we have raked back the windshield.

    IMG_4405 - Copy.JPG

hinge removed with rivets drilled out along with spot welds

    IMG_4407.JPG

    cleaned up

    IMG_4411.JPG

angle mocked up,pattern taken from the passenger side thats already proven

    IMG_4413.JPG

Notice the material (1/8") that we can remove to lean the hinge body into the body 'A' post rather the eating into the door frame 'A' post.

    IMG_4415.JPG

notice more taken out of the top ,zero at the bottom.

    IMG_4418.JPG
    in position

    IMG_4424.JPG
and in full working non binding /squeaking order.

Now as the hinge 'outer body' doesn't sit with the same line as the new configured raked windshield we can add material to the top right hand side and bottom left hand side of the hinge body to give a better flow of the hinge outer body .This wont intervene the most important part of keeping both hinge pins in perfect line with one another.

  9. Are those original 25 louver side panels or the newer Rootlib's. HRP

  10. You obviously have an eye for quality workmanship!

HRP, the hood is definitely the latter.

  18. Gary, we should have done the deal for my 5W. After seeing how nice the Tudor is I would have sweetened the deal with some cash!

Very nice! I'm really diggin' the re-profiling of the door hinges to suit the new angle. That's an absolutely cool detail that I don't believe I have ever seen before.

In my old age I'm not turning into a restorer, but I really like a stock height '32. Don't get me wrong, my sedan is cut 2" and my '48 pu is too, but when I read "Bonneville chop" in the title I cringed. When I seen the pic of the cherry body I said to myself " There's another idiot ruining a good body", but I hung in there and kept up with your progress. I've got to admit your doing a beautiful job. Great proportions and excellent workmanship. A ton of work in the windshield posts. Thanks for sharing.

  27. Great work, my 32 tudor is stock height, but if i would chop it, this would be a great example of how to do it.

Detailed photos on the inner passenger 'A' post .Mixing and changing things around along with aligning the slimmer top to the fatter lower part of the 'A' post due to the removal of 3.5".

over to the passenger door top modifications.Again as the structure of the door frame rail tapers from the belt line to the top ,taking out 3.5" causes a problem if not addressed ,leaving an ugly step at the top of the door frame ,just like the 'A' post .
We now address the blending of the door top frame so the end result looks as though it came from the factory this way.
We show all the modified areas /re aligned highlighted with mig tacks ready to be fully TIG welded...

    first pictures.
