  1. There are probably many women and children that should be thankful it didn't. LOL

Bert Hellmueller of Louisville ran Ranger engines in IMCA up into the early 60s and did well with them.

A little OT but if you are talking about beautiful aircraft the Macchi Castoldi M.C.72 was built to compete in the Schneider Trophy it was powered by a supercharged 24 cylinder Fiat AS.6 (Two AS.5s coupled together) with counter rotating propellers.
Due to technical difficulty's it never competed in the Schneider Trophy however it did set the outright aircraft speed record and the sea plane record at 440mph in 1934 holding the outright record for 5 years it still holds the sea plane world record!
I always thought the AS.6 would be an incredible engine to use in a car.

My neighbor commissioned these recreated from scratch 1913 Roberts liquid cooled,2 cycle,75 hp,inline 6 engines. Patterns done so they can also
cast the single carb 4 cylinder also. All new, right down to the 5 ball Kingston carbs. Pictured below is the dyno mule that is now running and making 104 hp @ 1100 rpm. Second engine is nearly done and will be used in his recreated Benoist floatplane to commemorate the 100th
anniversary of scheduled airline service with a flight across Tampa Bay
Jan 1,2014 . Anybody aware of any Roberts engines used in automobiles?

My Talbot 'cyclecar' is nearing its end of build, and I feel time for creating an Edwardian aero engined racer has come. (albeit there are still two other projects waiting, so there is not too much stress!) Anyone knows where to find a suitable chassis of between 1906 and 1918, preferably chain drive, and a Curtiss OX-5 or Hall Scott A7 engine?
Nice to notice that I find 'old friends' in this thread :), so it seems I am not the only one beeing in love with the two extremes in the car world, cyclecars and aero engined veterans. Makes me happy!

I wonder what the story behind this was.

That's a poetically grim building in the background.

I enjoy extremes of scale in cars. Another perennial daydream of mine is a hot rod or interpretation that is scaled-up in the Bugatti T41 vein. At a wheelbase of 4350mm (just to be 50mm up on the Bugatti) that would be a Deuce at 162%; chopped, sectioned, and Z'd just to get the height back to a normal-car range. Invariably I'd be thinking in terms of heavy-vehicle turbo-diesels, but an aircraft engine might be as apt.

Please give more stuff for us !!! Great thread !!

  23. Not strictly an aero engine, but the 1729" four banger(!) in this Fiat s.76 is a close relative of a Fiat designed airship engine. That´s two grown men standing behind the car!

I would be very much interested to learn more about very early aero engines. I bought a 1909 4 cylinder air cooled aero engine and look for a suitable little chassis of the same period to put it in!

This is the engine in my 1913 chater lea cyclecar , I built this car a few years ago and have since sold it to finance the Jappic recreation ,

Ok why is it here this is a 1925 blackburne aero engine of around 700cc normally run inverted but I modified the oiling to run the normal way up

Possibly the smallest vintage aero engine special
