Thank you Joker! That is a fine collection of cars, many of them came from some of the very early collectors, the 1906 Compound is one of my favorites. Bob

-It's an awesome museum. I was just there myself a month or so ago, and I was very impressed. It's not just some warehouse filled with old cars- the building was purpose-built for it, and they sure didn't spare much expense.

And the cars aren't just cars, they're significant examples of the car. The Compound is, as the sign says, one of only two or three known to exist, the 1898 runabout is the one and only example of that car, ever, the Sheldon is significant to Alaska, having been handmade by a resident, and so on.

On top of that, they actually drive them. All but the "more delicate" ones, as they say, are kept in running condition and driven periodically- and that includes the Stanley Steamer, the 1908 electric runabout and the Caddy with the V-16.

Basically, if you're a car guy visiting Alaska, make sure you get up to Fairbanks and stop in for a visit. It's worth it.

    Doc.

Thanks for taking the time to post and share. A lot of interesting history in that collection.

I'm always amazed that so many "new ideas" really aren't, someone [often in an isolated setting] came up with them years ago but they never made general use at the time for one reason or another. Some times it took improvements in production methods or key component material tech to make them durable, practical, commercially viable, and "acceptable".

JJ - you did a great job of showing the essence of the museum. I'm one of the docents there so if any of you guys are there on a (summertime) Tuesday evening I'll show you around. Only open on Sunday during the winter.

We got the tour of that museum last year on our Living The Dream trip to Alaska. I gotta say that we were very impressed by the quality of the exhibits. It's a must stop in Fairbanks.
