We haven't heard much out of Don Nowell lately....

Don,have you got any more stories for us from your days running the blue Chevy?

I really loved the ones about the steel plate trunk floor to get around the ballast limitations in the rules.
That kind of exploiting the gray areas is what makes racing great.Guys who are more prone to open up their mind than their checkbook are always great racers.

I heard one a while back about the Shelby team cobras and loosening off the mounting hardware at the base of the windshield,to allow the windshield to lay back about ten degrees more, and be a little slipperier aerodynamically on long, high speed tracks.
What they would do is duct tape the base of the windshield to the cowl to run it through the pre-race tech, then on the first lap one or two real hard up shifts would pop the tape loose, the windshield would lay back, and voila!Instant aero upgrade!:)

Got any sneaky little tricks like that for us Don?
Or maybe some slick little engine tricks from back in the day?

Saw his yesterday in Park City Ks at a car show. Great looking car in out and under the hood.
The big block might not correctly fit in C Gas though but as the car looks to be a better than 12.5 car at least a traditional roll bar would be appropriate.

It looked to be someone's 60's early 70's survivor that got stuffed full of big block.

  7. YES INDEED!!!

  8. Saw these wheelie bars yesterday at the nostalgia event in York PA.
Not considering function as I dont expect mine to pull the front end these look cool to me.

I had pretty much the same thing in mind for the Model A,including the push bar, cause it looks badass.
On the street it might serve to provide a. It of protection too.

They look a little newer than the first style wheelie bars, but still a somewhat homemade look. I like them. Push bars; single or double are a nice look on 30's/40's cars.

I put a set on my Austin gasser at one time, just for the cool factor. But quickly tired of them dragging going in and out of my steep driveway, and removed them.

  16. Found this old drag video with some Gassers and others.
Multiple tracks, some of which are long gone.

I could listen to that sound all day!

    Good to hear from you!

Sorry I've been such a stranger lately, been busy with some pipeline work....my days in the Arctic are apparently over.:)

OK, a little progress on the pontiwillys. Some on the steering and got the body stripped and protected for storage. Now you can see ALL the DENTS! I still have to put it on my homemade rotisery and protect the bottom. I will assemble the engine an trans this winter, budget permiting. I remember in 1964 or 65 a guy from my hometown drug home a 55 chev with blue tinted glass but my 55 came from the factory with green tinted glass.
