I've heard of guys pinning them, but I'd consider that a boat anchor. Those cracks are as common in a flathead as a SBC in a Ford!
Done all the time take it to a good machine shop and have them stitch it up that is not rocket science. T
Yes I had a crack like that on an 8ba block. My machinist sent it out to a specialist welder experienced with caterpillar diesel repair and that weld is still holding without any problems. That was fifteen years ago. As has been said, these flathead blocks commonly experience this kind of crack and before deep-sixing another salvageable flathead I'd first consider sinking the boat you needed an anchor for.
