    It's a flathead

Easy cold fix. A piece of tube or old valve guide and a

heli-coil. Maybe a couple of Lock-n-stitch across the crack

Find a thin wall sleeve and a lock-n-stitch. Stitch the crack. Drill hole, apply seal and press in the sleve. Then Heli the rest. Mill flat

That appears to be highly repairable with stitching (one brand name as previously mentioned is Lock-N Stitch. I have repaired much worse than that even cracks that traveled across the seat which required a valve seat insert.
No way is that block a boat anchor.

  6. I agree with these guys. I zoomed in on the picture. Worth fixing. Don't junk it.

The cracks seem to go north of the stud hole and south of the water hole. Hard to see with the eye, but you sure need to see how far they go before you throw lots of money at it. If they creep into the bore it might need a sleeve.

  8. Does your mechanic or the machine shop he took it to work on many flatheads? If not that may be part of the problem. If a late block looked like that it might be time to replace it but I would get the opinion of someone that works on flatheads. The only shop I know of is Kelly's Block Welding in Culver City, (310) 827-6795. They look like an old time shop and seem they have been there forever. You might check some places they work on diesel engines for a recommendation on crack repair. You might want to start a thread titled "Block repair in Los Angeles".

Just about every flathead has a crack in that location. Most don't need any repair at all.

  10. Yep some of them guys think that they are like small blocks and just laying around waiting for someone to build 'em.

H&H has been mentioned and that is where I would go if I were on the coast. I have repaired a block or two in my time and some that I was proud of. I would still take it to them if it were mine.
