    Early Chrysler Hemi's.....Extended Bellhousing
Offenhauser Adapter to attach an early ford 3 speed tranny
Does anyone have a photo of this done ????
Does the adapter but the tranny, "INTO" the Bellhousing ???
Or does it just make the Bellhousing that much longer ???
I have attached a photo of the adapter...
Sure would like to see what it looks like attached !!!!

    THANKS

I think your picture is for a later engine. The one you are referring to should be shorter.

From what I can find on line and from old catalogs, the 0403 Adapter is for
51-53 Chrysler V8's...A number of companies made these, and I am sure,
some where taller or shorter then others....

as the early Ford gearbox had an integral bell and the 51 -53 Chrysler had the long bell , the designers of those early adaptors did indeed position the box inside the extended Chrysler bell. Looked goofy but worked , at least for a brief moment !

    Lester...

It mounts "INTO" the extended bell housing of the 331 Hemi and sucks the little Ford 3-speed box further into the bell.

I can't locate my pics today but someone out there will help before I can find them!

Back in my early days i had a long bellhousing Chrysler with a Packard transmission. The Offy adapter was flat. The adapter to mount the 39 type Ford transmission did indeed sink into the Chrysler bellhousing. Just like yours.

    Ya know Les...

I have a few old 3-speeds here if ya want to drop one in your adapter and take a pic.

I even have a camera available.

That extended bell is pretty deep. It will swallow the old torque converter without gagging.

The housing on the early Ford tranny extends forward far enough to encase the relatively short input shaft, so what you are forced to do here is negate some outer housing length.
The Packard box mentioned has a flat front 'wall', and a longer input shaft...so its adaptor for the long housing '51-'53 Chrysler is flat.
The pic above shows an adaptor cast from an early Ford 4 speed, which essentially 'adds' a Ford clutch housing with its clutch cross shaft, Ford style...
But an actual Chrysler to Packard would be a flat plate type, with the Packard drilling.

I had a few of those long housing Chryslers with '37 Buick Roadmaster adapter, '37 Packard, and early Ford 'tunnel-type', and LaSalle.
Ford trannies didn't last long... LOL

The photos in post 9 are what you would have.
As mentioned, the old ford box won't last long so be sure to have a couple dozen available....
