Gil Hayward's "Monkey Motion," can't make out who the other altered is. Ron McKibben usually drove. Gil was an old-time hot rodder who belonged to the Glendale Coupe and Roadster Club and was friends with Don Montgomery.

This modified sports car (forgot the make) was run by Les Barath. Les escaped from Hungary after the 1956 effort for Hungarian independence failed. His attachement to his new country was revealed in the name he gave the car: "Freedom Fighter." He ran a blown Chrysler and got help from Les Hawkins, etc.

Ted Cooper, San Diego area, maybe at Paradise Mesa? This car was an HRM cover car with the headers dropping down in front of the Lincoln engine, HRM called it "pipe dream." Apparently the header design interfered with cooling and Ted went to a more conventional set.

  17. I had that HRM with Cooper's Model A on the cover. As a Kid, I thought those headers were the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Even then, I thought" how do they work on the engine, especially when the pipes are hot?!

  18. The pics posted here are always a VERY BRIGHT SPOT to my day! Thanks so much guys, and keep them coming . Mikey

I was at the Winternationals when the Boston Shaker crashed. My dad filmed it- after the wheelie, the car came down & snapped the front end. It careened into the other lane & hit the guardrail, where the body flew off & the rear end with both tires still attached cartwheeled down the track. Kosty ended up right in front of us, strapped in the chassis, engine still running. I've gotta find that footage!
