My old avatar looked so bad after being enlarged, I went ahead and changed it. The change was long overdue. It had been the same for 7 yrs.

I washed my hot rod avatar and now it has shrunk! Going to have to lengthen it into a fordor - damn....
The avatars display at 100 pixels wide by 100 high. So your image needs to be square. I recropped my original pic to 300 square and uploaded that and it now displays in proportion. Mart.
