Reverse is like neutral on the dailey driver. 78 Fairmont V8 with 145 K miles. Fluid level clean and full. Any wild tricks?? Has worked without a problem for 50 K. Time for a tranny I think.....OLDBEET

From what I can seee in my books it's going to be a problem with the reverse band. Looks like time for a rebuild.

But I'm not an expert, just have some old repair manuals. This one has a picture of a reverse band with the mounting broken off. It does mention that one of the symptoms of a band going out is a chatter in reverse, then it breaks off and no reverse.

Yes reverse is reverse band and high clutch apply,If you have 3rd gear you probably broke reverse band, but don't rule out band adjuster backing out or failed servo piston rubber. How did it fail?

On the drivers side of the trans, there is a round cover with 4 bolts. This is the reverse apply band servo. A common lack of reverse failure it the rubber lip of the servo piston torn up,and leaking=sudden lack of reverse. Remove the cover, pull out the piston, check, and replace the seal, the cover gasket, and with luck reverse will be restored. Good luck . Sparky:D

perhaps the late 70's C4s werent that good. i had non-stop issues in my old mustang II (pintostang) with a 302 & c4. had it rebuilt & still had the same problems. never take a tranny to ponte's in NJ. once i got it back & put it in, they said it was my fault it wasnt working right.

My MII Cobra started flaring BAD on up-shifts. I thought it was history!
Trans guy pulled the modulator valve and freed up the gummy piston inside.
    Worked perfect after!!!

Honest guy who could have taken me to the cleaners but it only cost me...I think $15.00 in labour.
