I was "hanging out" out at a gas station one night, at closing time across the street from my grandparents house where I was staying for the night. The young gas station attendant backed out of one of the service bays a 1953, nose high, Studebacker drag car and proceded to do two burn outs across the gas station drive while I stood and watched from the gas pump islands. I will never forget the noise, from the home made "zoomies", the smell of the burning rubber, the smoke coming off the drag slicks, needless to say I then and there became a "gear head", at the age of 10, the year 1961!
From that day forward I became the "kid" on the bicycle hanging around the Coronado Car Club guys and there car helping, ( being in the way), any way I could until the club members went away one by one to a place called Vietnam and the car was sheded, not to see the light of day until it came out of the shed 3 years ago ! It now , once again, is up and running at local drag strips by the same guys. Thus, the user name , The Coronado Kid.
