Most of the time a generator puts out little or nothing at idle. Your output is probably fine once you reach 1000-1200 rpm

I was going for 1960s as well; my tires stick out past the fenders
For my ‘32 pickup I used the column from a 1968 GMC pickup. It worked very well for me. It has an old-school look, turn signal and 4-way flasher...
