I started driving Mercs since I was sixteen. I have been driving them ever since. It was 1972, when I saw Curly Tremayne's 50 merc built by Rod Powell's shop in Salinas, article in Rod and Custom magazine.
The 51 merc I own to this day was purchased from Rod Powell in 1979. At the time, it was chopped, stock running gear, flatheadV8 with 3-speed and overdrive, flat black paint. By 1984, I had finished the car. In 1986 it was at the Sacramento Autorama, in 1987 The Oakland Roadster Show. It's been on the road since 1987 until 2007. During that time, I have been raising 4 kids and picked them up for their first ride in the mercury from the hospital after they were born. 1987, 1989, 1993 and 1996. My family enjoys my hobby and joins me in my 51 wherever I go. It's been my daily driver until 2007, it was due for a overhaul 20 years and 100,000 miles driven. Currently, we have put a fatman front-clip, rack & pinion, disc brakes and airbags, Smedding 400 HP engine custom built 700R4 transmission, stock rear differential 307 gears and leaf springs.
