My great grandfather, Jack Olsen, owned a livery stable and mechanics garage in Two Rivers, Wisc. at the turn of the 20th century. He began working on horseless carriages in 1905. By 1910, he was building engines for racing. In the 1930s, he owned Cities Service stations in Arkansas. He was known as the " Captain", or Captain Jack the Flying Dutchman.
My grandfather, Howard Landree, married his daughter and began helping with the business before entering WW-I.
He became a local street racer and was joined by my uncle in 1946. That year, they bought a 1932 Ford Roadster. We still have it today.
My dad, Captain Jack II, was stricken with polio in 1949 at age 11. By 1953 he has returned home. In 1956, my grandfather revivied family hot rodding to give my dad a challenge. They bought a 1931 Ford Coupe. We still have it today. My dad built most of the car himself, with my grandfather and uncle helping where needed. He could not drive a stick, so they installed a Hydromatic and a hand operated brake system. My dad was quite a man and never let his condition keep him from doing things like building hot rods, dragsters and drag racing. He died in 1997 at age 59.
I have been hot rodding since age 14. I got my dad's Coupe running again and drove it to high school. My wife and I had our first date in it in 1984. I'm still at it today, specialising in flathead powered cars, rebuilding 1930s McCulloch superchargers, and other oddball blowers. We cast Ardun valve covers and adpaters for flatheads and SBCs. I have a large collection of vintage speed equipment, mainly old blowers.
