I had two uncles who were involved in the California hot rod scene in the 'late '30's and '40's. I grew up on a farm and one of my earliest memories is Dad putting a '28 Chevy four banger in a 1930-something Farmall tractor. Other tractors that got overhauled always got a big bore kit. I started reading Mechanix Illustrated about 1953. They had a column devoted to "the MI Ford" a 1950 2 door that they gradually hopped up. The mag also covered the NASCAR races where I first read about Smokey Yunich.
