CTKID 34 3 Window - Drive it before I die!

This is my 34 3w album. Bought the body & frame in 1975. Lots of other cars before and since but this one has my heart. My theory is a car that can be restored should never be chopped up for a stre

Boxing plates mocked up with c clamps. Can't have to many c clamps. Will mock up IFS cross member next. Idea is to mock up entire front suspension, put fenders on and verify wheel is centered in fender opening. Then take it apart, tack weld and re-check wheel in fender opening. Then weld it up. Strongly considering having a pro do final welding. My family will be riding in this thing.

Engine mount additional support. Will be welded to back of frame boxing plate. It is 3/16". Made it 3.25" x 12". Read SAC does this with their boxing plates. Only company I have heard of doing this. About eight years ago I called them and asked if they had a diagram of a 34 frame. They sent it to me, no cost, in less than a week. I promised to repay them. Here it is, they have my endorsement. Big Block Chevy going into the 34 along with my children. I can deal with an extra 30 minutes fabrication time and a couple of pounds. Center of 12" plate will be 28" from front end of rails. It is the frame boxing plate I made using torch & grinder instead of cut off wheel. I have many hours into this support (because I lack skill - see previous picture description).

Boxing plates for engine compartment. Traced frame rails onto poster board (from point inner frame rail splits from outer rail just behind firewall forward to where front frame horn tapers, by radiator). Cut out template and traced it onto 3/16" steel (after cleaning it up on both sides). Used cut off wheel on hand grinder to cut first one, verified it fits both sides then used it as a template for other side. First attempt was with oxy ace torch, angle iron straight edge and c clamps. My torch skills are terrible. I spent hours grinding because my cuts were so bad I had to leave them 1/4" from desired size. Will work on torch skills. Had to use cut off disc or I would never get this thing running. Less than one hour to cut two out versus multiple hours cutting with torch and grinding.

Tack welded then stitch welded using MIG Miller 185 set at 3 & 50. Hard not to burn through but wanted good penetration. Wish I knew more about welding. Weld then grind to base material over and over until no sign of joint, holes, cracks, low spots, etc. Used grinding wheel (4.5") on hand held DeWalt 10K RPM grinder. Also used 36 grit disk with backing pad (different from backing flange for cutting wheel) to clean it up. Inner frame rail (there is an outer and inner on 34's) intact with no rot. Not sure if I should leave inner rail alone or cut it out and weld in 3/16" plate for additional support. Frame rails will be boxed so I need to decide and do it now as boxing takes place very soon.

Traced edge of opening on paper, cut it out & transferred it to patch material. Used a metal cutoff wheel (13,250 RPM) on hand held DeWalt 4.5" 10K RPM grinder with Backing Flange to cut patch a little big. Ground to size and beveled edges on pedestal grinder. Also beveled hole edges with hand grinder. Positioned with magnets. Tried using attachment for cupped grinding wheel insteal of backing flange. Exploded several cutting discs resulting in pieces flying through the air. Life is to short. Paid $5.75 for my generic backing flange. DeWalt sells them for $2.97 but are hard to find in local stores.
