I spent the last two days working with my dad on reproducing the wood b-pillars and the wood above the door. When I got the car, the wood had all been striped out, however I was able to get an original set suitable for duplicating. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The original wood above the doors was a myriad of scrap wood held together with dove tail joints, nails and glue. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The original wood was rotted at the bottom, but there was enough on one to screw the bracket through one hole. We were able to index the rest of the missing wood and duplicate the mirror on the other side. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
The wood replacement takes time and patience but is lots easier on the Fords than the Chevy bodies. I used treated yellow pine on my 32 tudor. Thanks for sharing!
Here are some more pictures from this morning. We had to dig deep into my dad's tool stash and go "old school". Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Definitely...I think the fords used ash originally, but we had some oak. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
^^^^ Regarding the picture above.....I was always told to lower the upper blade guide down so it is positioned just slightly above the thickness of the board you are cutting. That way you might be able to cut off a finger or two, but at least it would be all but impossible to cut off your whole arm. That much open saw blade scares the crap out of me. The new wood looks great!
Thanks, band saws scare the crap out of me....I have a lot of respect for them. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Awesome work guys! Working with wood is tricky...you kinda get one chance, not like metal where you can re weld.
Makes me more confident in keeping my next wood framed body project, should I dare to buy another project... You guys are really doing a fantastic job. And oak is great wood that lasts. Sent from my XT1585 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm definitely more comfortable with metal...my dad is the wood guy. I have been prodding him for some time to do these. Once we got started he enjoyed it. He normally does furniture as a hobby. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks, tomorrow we should finish the pieces above the doors Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Did the shaping of the wood above the doors and final sanding on all the pieces. Now they go on the shelf awaiting installation. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My dad passed 12 yrs. ago today, he didn't like woodworking, metal work or cars. Be very thankful you get to work with your dad.
A little off topic, but we got the body media blasted today. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
These projects have been good for both of us...I'm the hotrod guy, this wood project has been his chance to lead and teach. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
