Hey Darren, nice to see another 49 getting ready to hit the road. I just pulled the front clip off my 49 Super and am going to put a J&W Rod garage front IFS clip on it. Disc brakes, power rack adj coil over shocks etc. Going to fabricate a bracket for a GM type 2 pump on the old Fireball Str8-8 and a new master for the brakes. Like I said I'm keeping everything else stock from the motor back. Not a big fan of the Dyna-slow but it works. Down the road maybe a different auto tranny and rear with a drive shaft instead of the torque tube set up. I know what it's like building cars at the same time you're raising a family but it can be done. Slow and steady wins the race. Good luck

    Thanks mate
In keeping the stock torque tube setup and rear diff.
The whole drive line will be stock with the exception of the 41 dual carb intake and dual exhaust.
    248 straight eight

    Your front end sounds sweet!!!!
They don't really like those conversions over here in Australia.
Scared bird have a direct bolt in twin cylinder master cylinder for disc brake front ends that replaces the old single unit, I am going to use one of there's.
I'm interested in seeing how you set your rear axle up.

    Cheers again
    Darren

Stock all the way back but I was wondering. Since it's a coil spring set up with trailing arms and crappy shocks, why couldn't a guy scrap the shocks, springs and fabricate some bracketry and install some coil overs to replace the old? Seems like an easy deal that would not be too costly and would have great gains. Any idea's from anybody?

I'm hearing ya. Maybe later down the track like a lot later I may do something different out back, but for now stock is all good, the rear lever arm shocks I had the rebuilt. The rear floor and chassis notch will be fine for any future upgrades.
I have heard of people using chev truck type of trailing arms with a floor mounted bracket behind the rear gearbox, and modified rear panard link.

More stuff to cypher, thanks. Friday looks like the day we pull the 8-Iron and wack the front clip off. Measure, measure, measure than measure once more and weld the new one on. Should be on its wheels by Sunday. I'm thinking of taping it step by step and post it on Youtube to help anyone else who's going to do this. I'll keep ya posted.

Hi .. I wouldn't personally use coil over shocks on such a heavy car..it would put a lot of strain on the mounting point...could break out the mounting point and punch through the floor pan...seen this happen on our local cars ie "Holden-Falcons"....they are not acceptable under our road worthy laws anyway.... the original Buick spring is a good set up ...ride is exceptional.... I would just use top quality gas shocks.....

I've been for a ride in KB's (actually his wife's) 49 Super. It pulls mighty strong. I'm building a similar 263 for my 38 Buick. Anyways, can you provide the info on Scarebird's bolt in twin cylinder master cylinder for disc brake front ends that replaces the old Buick single unit? Since you are running the OEM 3 speed and closed driveline rear axle, you may want to change your rear gear ratio. Any pumpkin (diff assy) from a '41-'55 Buick will bolt into your current housing. Buick offered gear ratios from 3.41, 3.56 (3.60), 3.90, 4.10, and 4.41 in these cars, depending on the years. There's even a rumored 3.23 set, but I have not confirmed, or found any. For instance, the 3.41 sets are found in the '54 Buick Century. Interested to see what you are going to do with the Caddy trim on the car. If you can find a gearbox from a 37 or 38 Special (toploader), your 49's gear set, bearings, and synchros should drop in its case... If you get to playing with torque tubes, be aware the dynaflow units attach to the tranny with 5 bolts verus four bolts on the 3 speed tranny.

Thanks! I have the 4:10 diff that came out of KB's Super, if you want it. Pay the freight, and it's yours. I have it sitting in a 5 gallon barrel of used Delo 400 (diesel) oil. Gear set looks like it is brand new. Have the axle shafts as well. Nobody here seems to need them. John

    Small update.
Both sides are welded on the outside of the chassis rail, a little more welding and grinding then start we will start on the inside of the chassis rail, we are leaving the factory hole in the rail for now to line up the inside of the chassis, The inside if the rail where the rear spring sat the original chassis piece will be placed back in make it look as factory as possible. More pics to come tomorrow.

    Small update tonight!
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397038739.516005.jpg
I thought I'd show how much we cut out of the chassis.
    ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397039022.712508.jpg
We cut away the 4mm steel plate around where the rear spring sits that we welded in. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397039187.488862.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1397039203.228465.jpg
This is the original chassis section that is going to be welded back in to make the whole chassis notch look as factory as possible.
    Cheers

The original inner section is welded back in, it just needs to be ground back.

I have stock setup with bags. keeping the hyd lever shocks, rear axle, torque tube. just shorten the lever so valve stays 50/50 at ride height. does not ride terrible but could be improved. adding a tube shock and adjustable pan bar would help a ton.

That's a really good idea about shortening the lever are shock stays, I didn't even consider it. I guess I can make them to suit when I have the bags set up. I'm going to also modify the existing pan bar by adding an adjuster.
    Cheers mate

Both inners are finished, next week we will work on the floor section.

The rear support between the rear chassis was bent and twisted, so I have cut it out, I will get a new piece folded up and weld the new section back in.

Body is unbolted from the chassis, we hope to lift it off next week. All the floor sections will be finished whilst the chassis is getting stripped and painted.

    Update!!
The body is off, only issue was pulling the steering wheel off, I had to soak it overnight the she pulled straight off.
It is starting to feel like I'm getting somewhere now, I stop by a local car wash and degreaser crap out of the chassis and high pressured it down, I got probably 3/4 of the old dirt and grease off.
Now I'll wire wheel the chassis down, there is no rust issues anywhere.
I have so fab up all my bag brackets now and paint and reassemble.
    Cheers Darren
