History A Tip of the Hat to the 2 door Hardtop.

First thanks for you interest.
The car started life as a 52 Ply Belvedere (2 dr HT) and a 52 Suburban, a friend started the project in the last 90's and lost the desire to complete the project. He did some glass work for me on a previous project and we talked about how he would love to see his dream car come to life, I could see the car finished, I bought it, two years of labor, and the rest is history. The Paint scheme is not to mimic a Gem top canopy, but it is the factory scheme for 52 Belvedere's. This winter I plan on building a thread on the build... stay tuned.

 

My Grandfather had sky blue 60 it was a beautiful car from what I remember of it. Too Bad I wrecked it when I was 2 years old.

 

Being I'm also a local Guy I knew about it before you bought it. Now that I see the stock Belvedere paint scheme I get it,,,,and like it better. Glad to see it got done. I have a similar project on my back burner and will also use the same Glass Guy.

57-59 Plymouth and Dodge 2 dr hardtops, and 55 Merc and 56 Ford and Merc hardtops rule.
I'm a sucker for thin laid back C pillars...

The Marlin is an awesome car. A buddy had a 67 he put a 401 into. That thing was a screamin machine and an awesome highway rapid transit system all in one.

And it looked good, too.

 

I love the hardtop as well and am very happy to own one, a mopar to be exact

 

And the Tbirds.......

Many of the HT models had their lines messed up with a gas filler door on the side.
Fortunately many designers also realized this and placed "hidden" filler doors for their cars keeping the lines clean.

 

I've been reading "From Here to Obsurity" and found that the 1918 Model T coupe was a 2 Door Hardtop.

Also attached is a picture of the skinney me and my wife 3 years before we were married AND my 56 Chevy 4 door hardtop.

 

Crummy old cell phone photo but here's my hardtop… hardtops are SO much sleeker. I usually refuse to drive it with the windows up!

 

My dad always said if your gonna cruise in a hardtop, the windows gotta be down. Yet so many of the pictures posted, the windows are up. It ruins the look of the car. As soon as we arrive in a town we were headed for. He would say roll the windows down, somehow he learned how to roll the window down behind him while stopped at a stoplight. Luckily for me, the car(a hardtop) in my avatar has factory power windows.

 

6 pages and noone has mentioned the first of the bunch.... well here they are all from 1949: Buick Roadmaster Riviera, Cadillac Coupe de Ville, and Oldsmobile 98 Holiday. I know the town and country hit it first in 46 but it was not considered a production car. now lets see some pics of the 3 mentioned as kustoms.

That's the way I feel. Here's a 52 I had for a couple of months last fall.

 

Gordon Buherig designed the 51 Ford Hardtop, the 36 Cord and a bunch more.
