Hi guys been having trouble sealing the rear main on a 350 it has a slight wear mark where the seal runs Has anyone used the 2 piece double lip seal and was it good or bad Thanks Colin
Used hundreds of them...no problems...a very little dab of silicone on the ends of the seals across to the edge of the main cap to where the sump gasket meets it. Also where the seals sit on the block and cap I used to put a slight smear there as well.. Just be sure the sump is sealed nicely as well.. NOW, this bit...could be an ol' wives tale but, but... Keep your fingers out of any siliconed area because of the natural oils in your skin stop the silicone adherering to the block, cap or sump. My thoughts only.
Also an offset rear seal is available for your problem. Has to be ordered but available from Fel-Pro and Victor-Reinz.
Does it help to turn the seal so the edges are not in line with the edges of the bearing cap? I have heard this can also help to not leak.
Yup...you are totally correct..that stuff sticks to everything. By the same token I just kept my skin away from the product just in case it wasn't an old wives tale..(especially around the intake water jacket areas) The offset seal is the way to go here..
Fel-Pro used to make a rear main seal that was known by (A good parts counter man ) by the nick name of the " Grey Seal " I used them a few times but that was many years ago. Maybe someone on here knows the one I am refering to & has a part # you can use.
