Features Saw this yesterday and still can't believe it

To think because of people like him most of us have our cars today. I thin we should thank him for letting them sit, it is not every day you find a blank canvas to build from. Some day they will be sold and some day it could be my son the next generation building that vette because it will possibly be in his budget from sitting all these years.

I'm thankful for people like this that saved it from being scrapped back when Lady Bird Johnson was out to clean up the land and have it all scrapped. They're all getting older now and it's just a matter of time before they kick off and then the family usually sells it. Yes, sometimes it get scrapped but there's hope.

As far as beating up on hoarders, how many people have more than one old car out there? Or several deuces, tri-fives, etc. I've wondered about how they've driven up the prices because it's made them more scarce for the rest of us. In some ways though that's resulted in a good thing. Now they're re-popping deuces, tri-fives. Who knows what's next. Pretty soon I expect there to be a flood of old cars on the market as the old timers pass on and their collections once again come to the light of day. Just my .03 cents worth.

 

I've sold projects, parts and race cars in the day where times were tough and I had a family to feed and never regretted it once.

I'm heading down the same road sooner than later with my wife being seriously sick. I may as well sell it all at age 59 than try to at age 79 when I may not be 100% all there. I'm at the point where material items mean very little to me.

In these days, old cars rotting into the ground are possibly worth more as scrap than as a project. And now you have to defend that hoard from outsiders who see it as an eyesore or potential gold mine.

I am a believer that there are many that have a car or collection they dream of rebuilding or restoring, or whatever.
The point is if they sell, their dream goes with it. They may be more unwilling to give up their dream than the cars themselves.

I know people who hoard a few cars. Many of the cars go down hill during their position. This can partially fit a few cars I have and have every intention of doing something with.

Many of these cars would have been crushed, wrecked or trashed 10-20 years ago. Now people are concerned about one in a 1000+ which survived.

Here is what I see. Everyone has a vision of what a car is to them. You can enjoy your vision if you buy the car. If you don't own the car then you are not entitled to force your vision on someone else; that's socialism.

Freedom is living your vision as you see fit. For many of the cars I see rotting away somewhere held by someone who has a memory of that car, memory of driving that car, memory of life which happened when the car was a live.

Most feel one day they will do something with the car and re-live that feeling. More often then not it does not happen......Which is ok......why?....because that car fulfills their dream even when it is rusting to the ground. What more can you ask of any property.

My wife ask me what to do with my cars when I am gone. I said, what ever you want! They will be yours then. Easiest thing may be to bring in an auctioneer and sell them to the highest bidder then be done with them. When I am gone I certainly will not care any more nor will I own them.

Until then, these discarded hunks of tin are my hopes, my dreams and my vision to do with as I chose.

 

Been to plenty of old junk yards in the northeast. Anything that sits outside in this part of the country, for more than say 35 years is usually too far gone to restore,except maybe trim pieces. Now Corvettes!!!

I agree with everyone that say it's "His property" so let him do with it as he wanted..... He obviously loved motor vehicles as we all do, just may not have been as able as some of us to do with them as he would like to... Just being able to wake up and look out at your yard full of the cars you always wanted. Guess what he's got them!!

Wow! quite an ecelectic collection! Just enough of a little of everything to seemingly piss everyone off! I love it! It's just a old car forum, no one was threatening law suits to take the guys cars away. Just people with a different opinion of what they would do with a car or two if they owned them, and not understanding the guys life style... so what! And then other people saying the guy could do what he wanted with them, I don't really think anyone was saying otherwise. My favorites were the guys that were getting pissed off about guys getting pissed off! huh?
But man! ...the guy has some nice old stuff that I wish was in my backyard.

Well said. They earned or inherited the right to own that dream and if it helps them to be happier until the end, so be it. It's all just "stuff" anyway - rusty or shiny.

 

It would just bug me to death to leave some of those cars outside to deteriorate.

Instead of buying all these old cars over the years, he should have used that money to drink beer/wine/booze. Or gamble. Or travel. Or Women. Then these cars would have been scrapped out years ago. Then he'd have a big empty property and this thread would never had existed.

It seems there are lots of these collections out in the southwest. It also seems that all the weather does to them there is patina them.
Us from the east coast and north go berserk when we see this because we think the cars are all going to solid rust, like ours have that are left out in the elements.
Texas seems to have a never ending supply of solid ass AD Chevy Trucks.
I'm glad the guy kept them out of a scrapper.

 

Everything this guy owns is more than likely paid in full. How many people on here can say that.

 

They never star out as a hoarder. Many times they don't start out poor. Everyone has a dream. How Quickly does 20 years pass. An engine pulled for a rebuild and set in a shed Walk by it every day, it looks the same.A photo from 20 years ago may is not though. Kids happen,wives happen, jobs are lost, but the dream remains. Poor is perceived sometimes to be worse than it is. A person living in squalor, in a house that they own can be a richer person than most. The Landlord isn't telling him to get rid of his cars. The county may take them if a developer wants his land, ,or the kids may scrap them when he is gone, but he has what makes him happy now. He may well be tired of being offered 5 g's for the Vette, and 50 bucks for the rest by some "I need some Meat on the Bone" speculator, and not wanting to sell them. I would be. I guarantee he knows what he's got.

 

You should contact the guy and ask him to come respond.

 

Yes a HEMI in a Vette I have yet to see that done. It would be a head turner/spinner

Wonder what everyone's responses would be if these were just run of the mill old 4 doors?

 

Got one of these guys in SC, he's probably got around 80 cars in an old facility out in the middle of no where. Bought the building cheap, started working for a service company that would visit houses all over a four county region. He would find the cars and simply put them in the "barn". I first met him when he was driving my dream car, became friends with him and his wife for 20 years and even helped him during a really bad period of his life. Three times he sold me a car and three times when I went to pick it up, he kept the car. Best of my knowledge the guy still has his "barn" full and is still adding junk around the building................and I've never seen him finish a car that he started on.

 

google "hemi in a Corvette" and you'll get a few links to other threads here on the HAMB that have just that!

 

It would be kinda cool if the Vette motor was in the twin screw Fleetside. And it was a rat motor too.

 

If everyone took perfect care of their vehicle that is now considered a classic we would be up to our ears in them

Personally, I like to see stuff like this. As mentioned above, most of this stuff would have been crushed long ago if not for the eccentric dudes like this!

 

Here's a story I'll share. Up here in Maine, there's lots of property for hoarding stuff. Not far from me is a rather large collection of old trucks, mostly 30's-60's. They have been there for years and belong to an old guy who just plain likes them sitting in his woods. No he has no plans for restoring someday, they just look good to him. Last year, a local shitbag druggie spotted his collection deep in the woods. Shitbag would sneak in there at night with a trailer and winch and steal them, hauling into the city for scrap $$ to fund his drug habit. He stole many of them before he got caught. (slap on the wrist) I was sick when I heard about it. Most of us who live in my area knew this low life and you would not believe how much of a thief this kid was but this heinous act really hit home to me..

He got away with ripping people off for many years but his bad Karma finally caught up with him. A week before Christmas, while pulling an old car out of the mud with a farm tractor, it flipped right over backwards on him crushing his skull like a watermelon. No one is missing that guy!
