History Found picture of my first hot rod

I ran across this photo of my very first hot rod. Thanks to my pops for rigging it up for me. Mom was never real thrilled about it, however, I never hurt myself or anyone else. That's a pretty new 1956 Buick behind me.

The smile on my face is priceless. Stu

heres me sitting in mine, wish i had it now, i wonder what it was based on???, funny you started this thread, i was gonna start 1 today,

 

My best buddy. He wasn't pushing. I would take off and he would jump on the back part of the frame and ride along. We would take turns. I'm surprised we both have all our fingers and toes left. Stu

 

NICE PIX STU!!! Makes you kind of wish life was as simplistic now as it was then. All the ones we built were down hill rigs, not many lawn mowers on my side of the tracks, brakes were what was left of our PF Flyers. Just be home before the street lights came on and you were OK. BILL RINALDI

Pop's was a great fabricator and rigger. His big problem was that he couldn't weld. The few pieces that needed to be welded, he took to work in his lunch bucket (steel mill) and one of the guys would weld it for him. The entire frame and body skin was bolted together, it seems I recall every nut was a square nut, rather than a hex. Maybe that's all they had at the steel mill.

It had some sort of in/out box (probably from the mill) that you could just push a lever forward and off you went. Pop's was quite a guy. Stu

 

About what year was that photo taken? Stu

 

Square nuts were the available goods from the local hardware store.

 

Well, he was a great user of stove bolts and square nuts. LOL Stu

Awesome! To think we cold have that much fun without, iPads. x-boxes, WII's and computers! And we came in when the street lights went on!

That's pretty cool. my first was was a peddle car fire trick (with the clapper removed from the bell ) about '57 or '58

 

Great pic Stu.. Brings back memories of the car my cousin and I built and totally destroyed in the same day in the York High School parking lot. Complications involving the drive system and throttle control. Good thing the driver was left sitting on the pavement before the run away big crash.
